PESHAWAR: The total strength of judges at the Peshawar High Court (PHC) reached 18 after PHC Chief Justice (CJ) Dost Muhammad Khan administered oaths to seven additional judges on Tuesday.

The newly-elevated judges include Justice Afsar Shah, Justice Malik Manzoor Hussain, Justice Musarrat Hilali, Justice Lal Jan Khattak, Justice Abdul Latif Khan, Justice Muhammad Daud Khan and Justice Akramullah Khan.

The notification for the appointment had been issued on Saturday after they were proposed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry while chairing a meeting of the Judicial Commission earlier this month in Islamabad.

Lawyers have welcomed the decision saying it would reduce the number of cases pending at the PHC.
