Turn-out for the last by-elections before the general elections in Vehari on Monday was predictably low.

The PP-239 seat in Mailsi sub district had fallen vacant upon the death of Pakistan Peoples Party’s Sardar Khan Khichi in November 2012.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf member Jahanzeb Khan Khichi and the party’s Vehari district General Secretary Tauseef Ahmed Khan both contested as an independents. PPP’s Imran Khan Khichi was the third candidate.

As many as 123 polling stations were set up for more than 155,000 voters in the constituency. More than 850 policemen were deployed for security.

Polling at stations 6, 104 and 109 was suspended for some time following scuffles between supporters of the candidates.

Only three votes were cast at station number 109. Polling officers estimated that less than 20 per cent votes were cast.
