KARACHI:

Despite the metropolis witnessing one of its bloodiest years in 2012, the officials of the home department did not answer a single question on the law and order situation during the year.

The claim was part of a five-year performance report of various departments of the Sindh government that was prepared by National Peoples Party (NPP) MPA Arif Mustafa Jatoi. The opposition MPA used the number of questions answered by officials of government departments as the basis of their performance. The total number of questions asked by Sindh Assembly lawmakers stood at 11,088. However, lawmakers only received responses for 3,065 of them, or for one of every four questions.

Talking to the media after the assembly session, Jatoi said that the human rights department fared the worst, as its officials did not answer a single question during the last five years. Meanwhile, rural development (four), youth affairs (five), and population and welfare (six) departments also fared poorly in terms of the number of questions they answered.

In comparison, local government (184), education (177), agriculture (167) and irrigation (136) departments were judged to be the better performing departments.

Talking about the home department, Jatoi said that it was among the most proactive government departments for the first three years of the PPP government when it answered 219 questions, but it suddenly slacked off during the next two years. Its officials did not answer a single question during the last two years, claimed Jatoi.
