KARACHI:

Two of Karachi’s top officers have engaged private lawyers even though the government was providing them counsel to defend them against possible contempt of court for defying Supreme Court orders on delimitation.

This came to light on Wednesday in another case the SC was hearing on Karachi’s violence.

The judges wondered why the police chief had engaged a private lawyer when government law officers existed.

The Sindh additional chief secretary for the home department, Waseem Ahmed, and police chief, Fayyaz Leghari, have been taken to court by a senator from the Awami National Party, Haji Adil Khan.

In September 2011, the SC had directed the federal and provincial authorities to re-draw Karachi’s constituencies in a bid to prevent ethnic violence. However, the authorities have failed to comply with the orders in 13 months. Senator Haji Adil Khan now wants them to be held in contempt.
