Timing, they say, is everything. Let us be clear, My Lord is entitled to pass the order at any time he deems fit. It could just be a coincidence. However, given our history there are very poor betting odds for that. In all likelihood there are two possible explanations. The first is cynical that God forbid it was pre-planned, a conspiracy to undermine democracy. The second is hardly more generous, that My Lords just do not care. For the moment, let us keep the abysmal performance of the present federal and provincial governments aside. With the utmost of deference, it is obvious that My Lords are not great admirers of this democratic government. One can live with that. More disturbing is the thought that My Lords do not particularly like democracy. The cynic might say that there is some evidence of that. The tone and patience of the Court shows a marked difference in dealing with the ‘bloody civilians’ when compared to ‘the gentleman officers’. The civilian rulers are not to be trusted; they are incompetent, corrupt, power hungry, etc. Though it may be substantially true, it does sound discomfortingly familiar, does it not.
One prime minister was sent home by the Court, another one might be on his way to prison. The Court arguably is vested with the power to order both. However, it would have been more convincing had a similar line be adopted with the IG FC in the Balochistan proceedings, who consistently flouted Court directions to appear in Court. No arrests ordered in the ‘missing persons’ case. Similarly the ‘Sipah-e-Salaar’ has always been referred to with ‘respect’, even when he refused to appear before the Memo Commission, etc. The Asghar Khan case was a welcome yet brief change of pace. The suo-motu notices of the speeches and press conferences of the politicians would have had more weight had the same robust, muscular and fearless approach been adopted to some other public speeches, for example leaders of banned outfits addressing public gatherings openly inciting people to violence (This in no way absolves the federal and provincial governments of their failures).
Far be it from me to attribute any ill-intent to the Court; they really believe themselves to be our saviours and are well meaning for the most part. At some level, it is befitting that the order to arrest the PM was announced in the middle of the Shaykhul Islam’s rally and gave it new fire. In spite of different coloured gowns, My Lord and His grace have a few things in common. They both claim to represent the people of Pakistan. Both of them cite long marches (albeit different ones) to substantiate their claim. They also share a disdain of the electoral process to quantify the level of support. They both have nothing but contempt for the ‘crooks’ in parliament (Although, His grace might have had some change of heart recently). Curiously both feel the need to repeat often their resolve to be the first line of defense against ‘undemocratic’ attacks; the test is still to come. They both have the desire to be popular and at the centre stage. At the risk of generalising, both of them have a similar constituency or support base, largely disgruntled urban middle class (with genuine grievances and looking for hope). Hence suo motu for CNG but not for the Hazara killings in Quetta, Babar Awan but not Malik Ishaq, Katrina Kaif advertisement but not SSP spokespersons on primetime, prime minister but not other higher-ups, etc, etc.
In any event, the heavens did not fall, at least not yet. One needs to tip one’s hat to Mr Imran Khan, Mian Nawaz Sharif and all the democratic forces in Pakistan for their refusal to become part of any intrigue. Bravo sirs. This is maturity and progress. Yet along with this small dose of optimism comes terrifying news. A Supreme Court bench has admitted a petition over alleged blasphemy against the courageous ambassador, Ms Sherry Rehman, and has directed the police, “to take action in accordance with law”. This does not necessarily mean the registration of a criminal case, although the standard practice suggests a case is normally registered. Legal technicalities aside, this is serious and reckless. Ms Rehman is one of the best that we have got. My Lords are expected to know the implications of even entertaining a ridiculous petition like this, the implications of even an allegation. Hate and venom should not be given space in the Supreme Court. The Court is not under obligation to admit all petitions for hearing and not every nut job has to be indulged. My Lords, if and when heavens fall, they will destroy everything and everyone underneath; everyone.

@Parvez: "On the Sherry Rehman issue the blasphemy law has to be corrected by the law makers, who are inept and cowards to the core and not the CJ."
IF a lawmaker who tries to reform the law becomes accused of blasphemy just for the mere fact that they tried to reform of the law, who will dare to introduce legislation to reform this law. IT is not as though anyone has accused Sherry of saying anything irreverent, the mere attempt to change the law on blasphemy cannot be the basis of being accused of blasphemy herself. The petition was thus without merit. By accepting this petition, for all practical purpose the court has signaled that any future legislative attempts to reform the implementation of the law will be resisted by the court.
@Usman Chatta: "In this context, most would agree that things were far better under General Musharraf. Given the unprecedented failure of the PPP government over the past 5 years, me and I like to think most of the country would rather see yet another general at the helms than Zardari for another half a decade."
You have right to think and express as you feel proper but others too enjoy the same right and majority wins.. Democracy is a game of numbers believing in the wisdom that every body will choose his true representative but unfortunately the public has very very limited choice of their representative coupled with lack or inadequate and incorrect information about their inspiring representative. This results in a situation where most unwanted person is able to claim to represent those who may in fact dislike him / her. It is like giving irrevocable power of attorney for five years . Can there be provision to review the performance of all those people's representative. ? Devices and methods are available and/ or can be developed .. Democracy gives the best result when real and true representative of the people and ultimately nation come in the Assembly for governance.
Bravo Saroop, excellent piece “Fiat scribo, ruat coelum”
@Shahid: Great exposè. Mind boggling it may seem but there is commonality aplenty between their lot that makes them flock together. . That disenfranchised mass will remain unwashed. They don't drink Café Latte and will never do that even if they learn what it means.
It is always amazing to see the "so called" liberal literati of Pakistan standing on the side of the feudal lords of the country in opposition to the lowly crowds. For some reason they do not seem to see who the current ruling clique comprises of and how they simply want to run the country in the same fashion as they mange their dears, tribes, clans and rural estates. That they have no regard whatsoever for the laws of the land - Shazeb case being the most recent example - and consider this country to be their inherited estates. We have a governor of Punjab who comes from a long line of Makhdooms and as of today his sons who are MNA's and MPA's are joining PPP where as only yesterday they were part of the Muslim League - no critique of this. For our liberal friends these shenanigans do not matter at all. Come what may the only persons they have criticize and ridicule by explicit or implicit jokes and innuendos are the CJ and his team. CJ should have taken the suo moto on Hazara killings in Quetta but those - the ruling PPP CM and his other friends - should continue to enjoy their vacations and what ever without any question. The CJ has done a herculean job in keeping the Balochistan issues in the lime light. When he declared the failure of the Balochistan government a while these very defenders of the PPP in the media went after him with a vengeance as to why he has done so. Alas there is no end to the hypocrisy that one finds in abundance in the writings of our liberal friends and for sure we have not yet even begin to see any signs of some self analysis and examination.
You are among the best. There is no article you have authored that I haven't admired, and I am an Indian. God bless.
You write very good without mincing the words. Keep on doing as is your job. It might take very long when nation will get proper "My Lord" or Sipah Salar". All best wishes with you and ET.
Excellent analysis. Hope the lords read this constructive criticism and make amends in their future actions as well as judgments and not indulge in sensationalism and favoritism which are harming Pakistan.
Sir Please dont call him my lord but my LADLA
@Author:
"...More disturbing is the thought that My Lords do not particularly like democracy...." . Though nicely dressed in a jurists jargon it does exposes a rather frightening support you show for the hijackers of the nation. Treating the "crooks" as champions of democracy, which they are not, is adding insult to injury to a lost babe who has not been able to find its way out of the woods, thanks to the plethora of saviours of every colour and variety. . A far more honest attitude is shown by the military, which does not exploit the term "democracy" to grab the Takht e Islamabad. . Unless the nation drops the notion that salvation lies in religion, street corner nationalism or ethnic groupings it would never be able to climb out of the abyss.
Judiciary is independent enough to deal highhandedly soft targets like politicians and parties having no armed wings. So Gentleman Officers, Malik Ishaq and alikes are well-aware of spine of judges. This pathetic scenario goes further bleak with our independent electronic media's consistent bashing confined to soft targets hence making disgruntled middle class look for demagogues.
You are my HERO! Superb, beautiful, fantastic & based on facts & truth.
You make it sound as if the CJ is against a democratic dispensation. This is not being fair and balanced because what the JC is against is corruption and bad governance masquerading in the guise of democracy. On the Sherry Rehman issue the blasphemy law has to be corrected by the law makers, who are inept and cowards to the core and not the CJ. In any case you are brilliant in the fact that you put your thoughts across clearly.
The secret is out....let the retirement time come and we would see the actual face of our saviours.
Excellent; succinct; brave piece, Saroop. Stay safe...
Its a brilliant article. Bravo to the dear author. Only if this nation sits down and thinks. The part where you mention My Lord's interest in breaking news material is spot on.
Excellent job Sir, If someone read it to My lord?
Regardless of all these intrigues and riddles concerning Pakistani politics, what the readers of ET need to grasp is that the vast majority of the population live in the countryside and are only concerned with how to put food in their families' bellies. In this context, most would agree that things were far better under General Musharraf. Given the unprecedented failure of the PPP government over the past 5 years, me and I like to think most of the country would rather see yet another general at the helms than Zardari for another half a decade.
Is there such thing judicial immaturity? I wonder...
They think they are making popular decisions. They are wrong. When they get retired and decide to come in politics people just ignore them.Examples.Aslam beg,Pervez Musharaff,Hamid Gul,Zaid Hamid,Tahir Qadri.JI.They can decieve people but they can not win their hearts. It was a bad attempt not a coincidence.Pathetic.Many more to come.Politicians should be prepared for that.
Lordships integrity appears to be compromised by personal interests, another power bloc has been resurrected in the name of political engineering of Pakistan.
oh lets not give credit where none is due. after every single opposition party declared their opposition, Imran Khan had no choice but to follow suit. He was shown his place at that announcement. Must have hurt him that nobody cared what the PTI thought, otherwise he himself would have been at the oppositions press conference. Any division at Raiwind, and IK would have been off to join the farce that was the long march. And after the SC order drama, it looks increasingly likely that the CJ's past is coming back to haunt him. Perhaps he should have resigned after his son's case was made public. After all, nobody is indispensable. Thats the kind of thinking that leads us to dictatorships and uncalled for extensions to thoroughly incompetent and unprofessional military men.
Very wise words but I differ on the point of accepting the petition against Sherry Rahman. In case Our Lords had refused to accept to hear, it would be safe to assume that one of her guards could kill her in the manner Salman Taseer was killed. The acceptance of petition is infact a protective cover being thrown on Sherry. Rest of it, cent percent golden words!
God bless you Saroop for speaking the truth and saying it like it really is. Keep up the good work !!!!!!
Marvelous Sir!!!
