KARACHI: It is unlikely that the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) will be able to start its first semester classes from February 1, as the university has yet to conclude the admissions process for its morning programme.

The university decided to extend the deadline for submission of admission forms till January 10 on Wednesday, after it failed to achieve its targeted number of applications by December 28, The Express Tribune has learnt through officials within the university’s admissions office.

FUUAST opened its admissions process for prospective students on December 18. The university’s academic council, however, had decided to start the process from November 25 so that classes for new entrants could begin from February 1, 2013. The delay in the announcement has been attributed to administrative problems that have plagued the varsity in the absence of a full-time vice chancellor since last February.

“Students do not seek admissions at FUUAST unless they fail to secure a place at the Karachi University,” reasoned the federal university’s registrar, Prof. Dr Qamarul Haq. “We delayed the admissions announcement for this reason, despite the academic council’s decision.”

University’s admissions director, Dr Syed Tahir Ali and Dr Sajid Jahangir, a member of the admissions committee, had resigned from their position on November 20 to protest against the delay in the appointment of a full-time vice chancellor, and the “bureaucratic involvement” in the affairs of the institution.

When contacted, Dr Ali complained that the authorities were not serious in addressing administrative deficiencies at the university.

Exams postponed

FUUAST also announced on Wednesday that all examinations scheduled for Thursday (today) at its Abdul Haq and Gulshan campuses have been postponed. Classes at these campuses will also remain suspended.
