GUJRANWALA:

Several young doctors in Gujranwala marked the first day of the New Year by breaking into the office of the Civil Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Anwar Aman and vandalising it.

They threw out the staff from the office and removed the name plate on the door. They demanded that the MS be removed from service for alleged bias against them.

The demonstration was led by Young Doctor’s Association (Gujranwala chapter) president Kashif Bilal. The young doctors later demonstrated in front of the hospital and blocked the entrance to the emergency ward, causing problems for the patients and other staff members.

They also threatened to close down the hospital, if their demands were not met. They dispersed when police arrived on the scene.

The MS registered a complaint against the protesting doctors.

He said that Dr Bilal and Dr Ehtesham had “destroyed the hospital’s peace” and turned it into a battleground.

Senior police officials directed the police station concerned to protect the MS.

Things have been rough between the MS and Dr Bilal for sometime.

On December 9, Dr Aman had written to the health secretary about Dr Bilal’s alleged misconduct. He said that he had called Dr Bilal to his office after he had received a complaint about him from a senior doctor.

“Not only did Dr Bilal utter curse words, he also misbehaved and kicked chairs,” the MS had said in the letter.

Dr Bilal had denied the charges.
