UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged stronger partnerships between the UN, governments, regional and civil society organisations to implement provisions of the UN global strategy against terrorism.

“Looking into the future, the secretary-general envisages enhanced implementation of the strategy through building in-depth knowledge of it, strengthening partnerships and ensuring comprehensiveness,” Ban said in his report presented on Thursday at the UN General Assembly’s plenary session on the strategy.

In a resolution in 2008, the General Assembly had called upon member states, the UN and other international, regional and sub-regional organisations to step up their efforts for implementing the strategy. The four main points of the strategy include tackling conditions that spread terrorism, preventing and combating terrorism, building capacity for states to prevent and combat terrorism and to strengthen the UN’s role in ensuring terrorism is countered.

Ban said that the UN’s Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force was the focal point for implementing the strategy.  APP
