Then there are those who say that polio vaccination makes our men go sterile. And to protect their manliness they chose to kill, teenage girl health workers. Conscious of unease, one can quote Kishwar Naheed, “Woh jo bachion say bhi durr gaye, woh hain kitnay chotay wajood mein.” (They whom little girls terrify, what small men they really are). We all know of them. What is more disheartening is the support they get back from their ‘educated’ and ‘understanding’ friends. “These attacks are a natural reaction to imperialist overstretches and you know there are kids affected in drone attacks as well” and other such familiar claptrap. No, this is not a natural reaction to anything and the foreign policy of Western countries has no bearing on this. All of us should condemn drone attacks on any children and innocent civilians. But it has no correlation with this. The obvious explanation in many cases is the correct one. There is this ideology of murder, hatred and violence and they will not even spare our children. In fact, they especially want to see out children crippled. Having to restate all of this so soon after Malala Yousufzai is tiring, but remains worth restating.
Dr Samia Raheel Qazi of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) had the nerve to state that Malala was a US agent. More recently, I saw Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on a talk show. When asked to condemn the attack on polio workers, Chaudhry Sahib emphasised the ‘complexity’ of the matter and smelled a ‘conspiracy’ and a lot of other mumbo jumbo, except he never took the plunge of condemning the attacks unequivocally or even generally condemning the TTP by name. How one wishes that they borrow an iota of courage from Malala and the young lady health workers.
It is exhausting to even try and rationalise the mind of the apologists. However, if one tries it goes something like, the TTP are CIA funded, if indulged further, they will reveal Malala was also a CIA agent, and was shot at so drone attacks can continue against the TTP in the tribal areas. So if we have it correct, the CIA agents are attempting to kill CIA agents so a justification can be created to kill more CIA agents. Also, if the TTP are foreign intelligence agents then surely no one would advocate negotiations with them. However, don’t count on them to see the absurdity of their position. In the Peshawar airport attack, the real story was that of the bravery of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police in making the attack unsuccessful. However, our focus remained on the tattoos. With the tattoo controversy, it must have seemed to Zaid Hamid that all his birthdays have come at once. Most of us have forgotten, how he proved that Ajmal Kasab was a Hindu nationalist because he “looked like a Hindu,” etc. However, he seems to have an expanding market.
Then there is the most used of them all, “those killing innocent Muslims cannot be Muslims”, or substitute ‘Muslim’ to ‘Pakistanis’, if you wish. I dare not go into for how long Muslims have killed Muslims for my selfish wish to live a little longer. However, for the Pakistani bit, December 16 just passed. The ‘uncircumcised’ Bengalis and how it was not Muslims/Pakistani versus one another is hard to banish. We know the others, the insurgency is Balochistan is foreign-funded, etc. However, we know it from the messiah, all will be well once the US troops leave, the attacks on girls’ schools and female health workers will stop.
As we continue with our charades of unconvincingly lying to ourselves, the terrorist go about their business of crippling our children. They do not seem to share our confusion on whether this is our war or not. They own up to this war and are ready to inflict maximum damage, while we discuss the hidden meanings of demonic tattoos.
This is not our war, they say. Take a moment, and go talk to someone who has grown up with polio and listen to their story, often stories of supreme courage, moral and physical, but also stories of unimaginable pain and suffering. If that seems too much effort, just have a look at pictures of kids inflicted with this now-completely preventable disease. Who would wish that upon their child? Who would wish that upon anyone’s child? The TTP and their clones would, and do. They wish it upon all of our children. This is what they stand for. Not our war, still.

Imran - I agree with you and would like to expand your list of evil and stupid to those also who subscribe or are sympathetic to taliban's philosophy.
Taliban are not just evil, what is worse is that they are stupid.
gentlemen,
why don't you put aside your biased position and suppress your emotions and ask your yourself how come the USA is so much committed to the polio program whereas theTalibans so persistently oppose it:
There is a simple explanation for this puzzle; Polio has been eradicated in the USA but ca return with dire consequences if it is not eradicated in all other countries of the world especially where the American soldiers are stationed. The Talibans know this and do not accept the presence of yanks on their soil now or after their departure next year! Hence the risk of yanks getting polio infection and carrying it to the USA is greater if the Talban land is not polio free.
Now, there are doctors on this blog and please specify the actual risk which the Talibans are taking with their own children verses the security risk of CIA operatives in Taliban land?
Have a nice day! The talibans are not that dumb!

@ Somethingclever If you can read the author was referring to some 'THE messiah" As far as I understand whom he is referring to-that 'the messiah' never made such a statement! It is a LIE to say he said that. If you say he did pls quote and prove it!
As a follow up to my email, I would like to shed some light on the causes that underlie the conspiracy theories which not only mask the real issues but also convolute them to the point where even simple solutions become improbable.
In my view, abundance of misleading while lack of real information has bred and nurtured numerous conspiracy theories in Pakistan. Politician's guile and lack of credibility, media's vested interest, judiciary's mind boggling priorities and para-military's ineffective presence have all contributed them to galore in Pakistan. It is an unfortunate reality.
Pickup any subject and confusion abounds - internal situation in baluchistan, fuel agreement with Iran, causes of flood in Pakistan - was water deliberately routed to protect landlords interests, indiscriminate killings of innocent civilians in Pakistan, the truth behind Hafiz Saeed's connection with agencies - and the list could go on. The point is, nation needs to know what is going on and who is behind their miseries and when would their economic woes end - but indifference is what one sees everywhere, particularly politicians and media. Has either of them unraveled the mysteries that surround the issues of interest to nation?
Just think why conspiracy theories don't work to the scale in west the way they do in Pakistan?

@Khalq e Khuda, that is completeky FALSE. Pls scroll up and read the statment he made on Bilour's killing he clearly condemned the TTP by name.
Another example is the following:
Pseudo congregation.
@unmet46:
Imran Khan always condemns the criminals but when asked who are these criminals he will deny that they are Taliban so his hollow condemnations are not worth commenting on.
@Hasan Jawaid: Totaly agree with you. Regards
There are some fascinating responses to 'Crippling our future' but it seems that there is a disconnect between Sarooj's message and the reader's take away, at least that's the way responses have come across. Let me share my take away from it and I could be equally wrong about it as well. First, failing to understand the root cause problem; we tend to believe too much in conspiracy theories and sensationalize it further by substantiating it with unfounded news that comes through cheap print media which is meant to generate daily sales targets and nothing more. Some internet sites also host political material but it is lop sided as it presents one side of the story and belongs to lobbyists and coalition groups with vested interested. Don't expect an honest analysis on such sites, the idea is to snowball their thoughts and disperse it among those who quickly embrace them. Second, failing to rise above party affiliations and religious parties agendas and failing to understand the gravity of problem our nation is facing. Pakistan is at the brink of economic collapse and we are far from realization where we are heading. Thoughtlessness, blind loyalties and lack of education are some of the reasons for hatred and senseless killings and the propensity seems to be on the rise. Need not to remind that Iqbaliat is replete with thought provoking poetry but unfortunately Iqbaliat and Quran are the least understood books. Third, not having the desire to read and failing to research. We read and learn religion and politics through maualanas and political leaders and our plight speaks volume on this. I don't think anyone has damaged Pakistan to the level we have, we should stop blaming the world and end these conspiracy theories. There is an expression in the west: 'You are doing doing a good job yourself, you don't need my help'.

@Logic. Europe m: Of course. And they persuaded the Congress to reject the Cabinet mission plan for keeping India united.
@sabi, 2cents: I certainly hope that you are proved correct and I am proved wrong. What is happening currently is very distressing at a very basic human level - religion and nationality does not even get into it. @Mirza: Thank you.I thought your version of the proverb was funny. On a more serious note though, I do not think the doom has always been tedhi and hence cannot change. I think force is being applied to make the doom tedhi and the people applying the force have vested interests in keeping the doom tedhi . This is why with each passing year it is becoming more tedhi. At this time more than the actual events, it is the apathy surrounding them that I find surprising Are people not coming out in streets to protest because they silently agree with the kilers or because they do not care or because they are afraid of the killers. I do not know the answers but without the people making their voice heard loud and clear the situation will not change.
What should one expect from JI when its leader says that if women don't have four witnesses, they should not report rape !!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nQTTDCromw
watch between 2:30 & 2:55
@ Rationlists That is because no one has accepted responsibility 4 this particular incident and the TTP has denied responsibility. Since the TTP claimed responsibilty of Bilour Sb's killing he mentioned the TTP while condemning Bilour Sb's murder:
A thought provoking article but for whom? Definitely those who believe in conspiracy theories, like Zaid Hamid, other right wingers, such articles are just an effort to pervert masses from the formidable issues like American design to take over Pakistani nuclear assets etc. Their is least hope even our deep state will ever rise about its strategic paradox and gain enough maturity to tackle this formidable threat to humanity.
Except ANP, MQM & some leaders of PPP openly criticize Talibans otherwise rest from PML(N) & famously Imran are just too scared of Talibans to even remotely criticize them. Sadly these Talibans invented by our ISI are out to destroy humanity, Pakistan & a potential threat to the whole world.
@kanwal: @gp65: "Saroop you are banging your head against a wall. Your head will bleed, the wall will not move." No matter how tall they build the wall of hatred, truth will make its way. There is always a possibility to jump over the wall. And process has started already. @kanwal: The whole racket of Panjab politicians, current and ex PML formulations, are doing all they can to make panjab an Ilaqa Ghair too. Kanwal Bibi, pmln is a well established politicle party and has nothing to do with mullah and fake politicians.Mullah and fake politicians seek power through lying.collusion with establishment, spreading rumers, concocting conspiracies theories, sabotaging every real effort to normalise relations with neighbours, jalao gherao.abusing religious and nationalist sentiments. In this dirty compaigne lot of people get confused and there is a risk of large section of voters fallin in their trape .The easiest way (not the ideal) to counter them is, to take slightly rightist line.Pmln or any other politicle party don't need collaboration with fake politicians but they need to save highly vulnerable rightist vote bank. Democracy in Pakistan is like a child who falls many a time before walking with stability. We should give it a chance.
Saroop, you cannot reason with people who have been brought up on a lifetime of fallacious arguments, false analogy, ad hominem attacks and hypocritical, self contradicting piety. Our schools and religious institutions need to teach rational thought before you can begin reaching out to the mind of an average Pakistani. Absurd thought processes are entrenched not only in religious bigots but in MQM rank and file as well as within our demagogues and their camp followers.
@ Kanwal you didn't get wat I said, hence you find it illogical. I said the journalists mention him only
he didn't condemn the terrorists. Its not like I said he actually leaves out condemning the Taliban or the other terrorists any time. But now that he is REPEATEDLY condemning the attackers of the Polio workers, and not a day passes when he is found mentioning this tragic event in news shows/jalsas. And yesterday during his trip to Karachi he vaccinated children with his own hand and condemned the attackers again.
Thus it is complete bias on the part of the writer for not commending and/or mentioning what he did/said.
@gp65: Saroop you are banging your head against a wall. Your head will bleed, the wall will not move.
@gp65: I enjoy your comments. I, also agree with: "Saroop you are banging your head against a wall. Your head will bleed, the wall will not move."
But, If enough people do that, there might be a crack some day. There is always a first person (or few) to challenge the flawed system.
@ Saroop Ijaz: Very well articulated, but I think you are just scratching the surface. To borrow from you: "With the tattoo controversy, it must have seemed to Zaid Hamid that all his birthdays have come at once. Most of us have forgotten, how he proved that Ajmal Kasab was a Hindu nationalist because he “looked like a Hindu,” etc. However, he seems to have an expanding market."
Sadly that seems true. The expanding market part.
Now below the surface: Why the expanding market? Answer--> because of X. Then, why X? Answer --> because of Y.....and so on.
if we peel the onion off enough layers, the only logical last answer will be: "lack of proper education" to the masses.
Solution: Not easy, but the ONLY one. A long, long, long.. at least 2-generations long process of open, fair, education without the taint of religion. Religion can stay home and "leave the children alone".
I hope you get to read this and incorporate as a solution in your future writings. ..Peace
@Author pls clarify yourself: "the CIA agents are attempting to kill CIA agents so a justification can be created to kill more CIA agents."
I see no conspiracy in it? Pls explain yourself :- )
@author: Only if your audience knew tautology or transitive properties, If A=B & B=C then A=C. Beautifully driven point.
CIA agents killing other CIA agents to get an excuse to kill other CIA agents. Awesome!
@gp65: There is a popular proverb in Urdu/Hindi that I have modified to fit Pakistani situation and it means the same as you said above. Kutte ki dum 12 baras nalki main rakhi aur jub dekha wo tehri hi nikli. My modification is jub dekha to nalki tehri ho gai thi Regards, M
Very well written. You make your point.
Bravely and intelligently written. Speaking to friend and colleagues, one is always frustrated by these conspiracy theories. Can can we ever hope to solve anything if it's always justified by mumble jumble, hocus pocus, twisted logic and circular arguments. It seems like a lost cause sometimes.....
A fair and balanced Op Ed, thanks ET. By depriving the kids of their basic healthcare including vaccination the terrorists are killing civilians of all ages. This is the worst form of terrorism against the civilians of Pakistan. The most powerful institution of Pakistan is silent spectator while the fanatic terrorists have literally taken over the country. Why do we have close to a million strong army when we cannot even protect our healthcare workers, elected leaders and innocent civilians? The terrorists have strong support in Pakistan and that is why they have successfully eliminated most elected top leaders of ANP, PPP in particular. While the elected nationalist and secular leaders are butchered all rightwing unelected leaders are never touched. No wonder they do not condemn Taliban by name and call them Jihadi! This is high time the people of Pakistan open their eyes and see who are the killers and who are being killed? While for an unsigned and undated memo ISI chief and three HC CJ and the whole SC can come into action not much happens when elected popular leaders and innocent women are butchered. On top of this tyranny the rightwing still spits venom against the elected leaders as if they are arranging their own murders!
"So if we have it correct, the CIA agents are attempting to kill CIA agents so a justification can be created to kill more CIA agents. Also, if the TTP are foreign intelligence agents then surely no one would advocate negotiations with them" Brilliantly put.
"Who would wish that upon their child? Who would wish that upon anyone’s child? The TTP and their clones would, and do. They wish it upon all of our children. This is what they stand for. Not our war, still." I feel your pain. Sadly, you are banging your head against the wall. Your head will bleed but the wall will not budge.
Saroop Saab, It seems the only logic that will work with these savages and other politicians is the following.
" If polio spreads, there will be restrictions on foreign travel; your sons and daughters who stay in the badlands of USA and Europe can not visit you and you cant go to those badlands s either."
Like presto they will find a way.
Nathan
The very creation of pakistan was a british conspiracy! How about that??
Saroop: With a few deft strokes you have brought out the "neurotic" richness and complexity of the Pakistani mind-set . However , I think it is no more possible to understand it fully by commonsense or rational analysis . We need a major effort by teams of clinical psychologists and psychiatrists to fathom its mysteries . Only with psychiartic help can some of us see that indeed Muslims are killing innocent Muslims on a mass scale with inhuman brutality .
author is always a delight to read but the distressing pangs of frustration that are expressed is mortifying. The fact that he has resorted to openly calling names is brave and hope this rubs off on to the terrified independents, if there are many..............
Saroop you are banging your head against a wall. Your head will bleed, the wall will not move.
"No Messiah ever said ‘every thing will be solved once the US leaves Afghanistan.’ Stop misrepresenting every ones’ position." Oh yes, they have. Stop lying.
Mr Ijaz, your fine words will not reach the ears they are intended for. In Pakistan, these extremists will kill just about any one. The will kill you if you:: are a polio worker, are a woman who works, are a woman who teaches, are a girl who wants to learn, are of a different religion to their own righteous convictions, are an honest journalist, think some laws should be repealed, are an innocent person, are a politician, or if they do not like your face etc., and the list is inexhaustible. But of course, it not Pakistan's war. It is a 'firangi's' war. I think Pak army are using their night vision glasses during the day so their view is kind of out of focus. The civilian government are too scared to say anything against these outlaws who should be caught and dealt with. Finally, look at it from purley numbers angle. Extremists do not have enough bombs and bombers to kill 200 million Pakistanis. They are bound to lose this war. Or at least that seems to be the view of heads of government, head of state as well as the heads of security forces. This situation is making security agencies in the neighbouring countries nervous. But Sir, keep trying, you are doing your bit rather well.
There is always an excuse for everything, everything and everyone has some excuse that allows us not to take responsibility for anything. By declaring every act a "conspiracy" the word has lost all meaning.
@unmet...why IK said sick criminals, why not Taliban ?
The whole racket of Panjab politicians, current and ex PML formulations, are doing all they can to make panjab an Ilaqa Ghair too. And the JI and JUI can never live a day unless they tell us about new CIA agents in the country. But i truly appreciate that finally Imran Khan borrowed some courage to condemn attacks on polio workers. @unmet 46 I wish you could understand the lack of logic behind your argument:so you are saying YOURSELF that condemnation of Taliban is not a usual thing for IK to do? And that when he actually DOES end up condemning such acts, he should be encouraged and egged upon? Sorry to say this but i think itshis JOB and RESPONSIBILITY by DEFAULT. And same is true for all the parties:when they condemn, it is bcoz they should ve. When they dont, we have every right to tell them that they have forgotten something as disastrous as terrorism in their rally speech.
Well written and you have nicely called attention to our national pastime of conspiracy theories and senseless jibber-jabber. Question being asked is why isn't something being done about this ? Expecting the political brigade to take a responsible stand is like barking at the moon. What is not understood is why our security agencies appear so helpless.
No Messiah ever said 'every thing will be solved once the US leaves Afghanistan.' Stop misrepresenting every ones' position.
BTW No direct mention of Imran Khan's view of the attack on Polio workers? Why? Because he condemned the Terrorists 'this time'? And you would only mention him once you think he didn't condemn the terrorists??
You know what today he went to the extent of himself giving Polio drops to children in Karachi, directly challenging the terrorists!
This is IK's statement regarding attack on Polio Workers:
.These friends of talibans are denying history. These lawless tribals used to kill angrez people(civilions) for few Rs in the name of jihad during British raj.Paid mercenaries with a long documented history. This area we call FATA was known as Alaqa Ghair,a haven for crimminal.smugglars who after commiting crimes got refuge from same people.Shame on the sympathisers of terrorist. Fake philosphers are sinking the ship.Unforgiveable justification.
Another item in the long list of miserable failures of this PPP government. It is the state's responsibility to ensure security for each and every single Pakistani.
How can they sleep at night knowing that innocent people are being murdered with so much ease. The governenment has NEVER had the spine to go after these mecriless killers and they have the balls to call themselves "elected"?
