KARACHI:

A group of 10 transplant patients of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) will be leaving for Abu Dhabi to participate in the Middle East Transplant Games from December 13 to December 17.

Athletes from all over Middle East have been invited to participate in the games which have been staged exclusively for individuals who have either received or donated an organ. “Staging sports and social events for transplant patients is a demonstration of the benefits of organ donation,” said a spokesperson from SIUT. “It proves that both recipients and donors can lead a normal and healthy life”. The events at the games to be held in Abu Dhabi include 100-, 200- and 400-metre races, a two-kilometre walk and swimming, table tennis and bowling competitions.

SIUT also sent participants to the first Transplant Olympics Games held in Sydney in 1997.

The Middle East Transplant Games are being held concurrently with the third Congress of Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation to encourage organ donation.
