Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) opposes the construction of the controversial Kalabagh Dam power project without consensus, just as it did when it was the ruling party in 1998, said Senator Pervez Rashid, a key leader of the PML-N and spokesperson for the Punjab government.
While commenting on Lahore High Court’s (LHC) judgment which ordered the federal government to implement a year long decision by the Council of Common Interest for the building of the dam, Rashid said, “Kalabagh Dam should not be constructed without the consent of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.”
In 1998, despite being the ruling party, the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz had steered clear of initiating the dam’s construction arbitrarily, the spokesperson explained.
“We respected the views of people from those two provinces. Their apprehension over the dam’s construction encouraged Nawaz Sharif to give up the plan,” said Rashid, adding that the party will maintain its commitment to consensus, and hence, might approach the Supreme Court against the LHC order. “We will have to see that on what grounds the provinces or other political parties challenge the court order,” said the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz leader.
Rashid said that the Lahore High Court’s order to the federal government followed a constitutional petition by an individual who wanted the Council of Common Interest’s (CCI) decision to be implemented. The CCI decision demanded that the federal government construct the project without further delay. The LHC judgment was taken on mere legal grounds after the petition.

Well done Nawaz Sharif!!
The recent announcement of Mr. Nawaz Sharif (Dec 5, 2012) in a press gathering to reject the Controversial Kalabagh Dam Project due to the valid reservations of the minor provinces especially Sindh, is no doubt a commendable step.
His views, that national unity is more important than the Kalabagh Dam seems quite valid. To give such brave statement especially a political leader belongs to Punjab, he proved that he is a mature politician and a leader of national level.
Well done Nawaz Sharif!!
The name of Kala Bagh dam may be changed to Bacha Khan dam or Haji Blour dam. Only then it will be acceptable to Pakhtun khwam khwa province
PML n should not play politics of appeasement .
They should clearly come out and say that Kalabagh is s must for Pakistan for electricity and irrigation and flood prevention .
Don't play politics with Pakistan, please.
who will bell the cat, if mian nawaz sharif is a national leader, he should prove himself to be a national leader. He should convene a joint conference of political leadership alongwith national and international experts and build national consunsus instead of mere issuing of statements in the newspapers.
We must die by the floods or what so ever happens but not allow the kalabagh dam at all, sir.
The labour party of pakistan fully supports the version of the PML-N. No kalabagh dam at all, let us be ruined by flood/disaster or else what happens.
Dear all, We do not need the kalabagh dam,let we die all.It twill be made on our dead bodies, sir. We are men of words sir. Those who say we could be saaved of disaster of the flood in 2010 if there was the kalabagh Dam,they are wrong and do not know the game of the kpk politics.
