The government sources claimed that five people were killed, while rescue sources claimed that at least seven people have been killed in the blast.
The Bomb Disposal Squad confirmed that a 15kg bomb was planted on a motorcycle. There are reports of another bomb present in the area.
Secretary Interior Balochistan Akbar Hussain Durrani told the media that a vehicle of security officials was targeted in the blast killing three people and injuring seven. “This is terrorism. But the morale of the provincial government and security forces to fight it is high,” he said.
CPO Quetta Mir Zubair also said that three people were killed and seven were injured. “We are in a state of war,” he stated.
He also said that initial reports suggested that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used in the blast.
The injured were shifted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH), while four of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
Security and rescue officials reached the site immediately and cordoned off the area.
The blast took place near the main gate of the district jail, while the office of IG prisons is also nearby.
Several security measures were taken to ensure law and order situation in Quetta during Muharram. The government had blocked mobile services and motorcycle riding on Muharram 1 and is considering banning them again in the future.

Army should move in and close the drama. Enough of Tribal Democracy and Misrule of Law.
Naseer "support from terror friendly political Parties and those who had been standing with the terrorists and facilitating them in the name of rule of law."
Are you indirectly implying Imran Khan and PTI?
Y can't we just stop the funding of these terrorists from saudi arabia and gulf countries? until we do that, we can't have peace in pakistan
Shame on the friends, supporters and apologists of supporters. Judiciary had God given opportunity to do some thing good, but they have lost their time and energies in settling their personal vendettas and letting down other institutions.
@Naseer: You are a looser and suffering from complexes. We shall soon be seeing this cruel dispensation winding up including the so called rule of Law.
@ishtiaer hussain: I fully agree with you. Courts are the weakest link in already very weak chain of our country security and justice system.
Are our judges living in bubbles? Don't they see tens of people killed routinely in bomb blasts and target killings? You are talking about forensic evidence. What a joke? Our judges don't accept testimonies of security officials and they don't admit mobile data as prosecutable evidence against terrorists. Indian courts handed out punishment to Ajmal Kasab to on the basis of mobile phone data and testimonies of Indian police officials. If Indian courts can do it, why our courts can't do it?
BLA involved.
Will now Hamid Mir do a special show to highlight the sacrifices of the jawans of FC for their country? No, he is a puppet and his strings are controlled by some vested interests.
Much of the time of our honourable judges is consumed by political activities (undermining the government's writ, humiliating security officials, making speeches before bar councils, appointing their favorite cronies as judies etc). So they don't have enough time for prosecuting terrorists for their crimes. Some of them even glorify these terrorists. For example, the Honourable CJ of Peshawar High Court even instigated people to take up arms against the security forces. If people with such mindsets are at the helm of dispensing justice, how can we defeat terrorism?.
Our judges are hands-in-glove with the worst terrorists. After the cruel murders of 40 thousand Pakistanis and the maiming of many more, they have yet to send a single terrorist to the gallows. We should take a lesson from how India hanged Ajmal Kasab for killing about 160 Indians. What is more: the terrorists who mounted attacks on the former president (Pervez Musharraf) have not been convicted so far. They will never be convicted. If a former president can't get justice, how can we common souls?
AJ Khan.. Who are the soldiers of Pakistan with? Had it not been for them we wouldn't have been in this situation in the first place. My utmost respect to the soldier on ground and none for the top brass who think they Own this country.
This is a tribute paid to the judiciary by the terrorists for releasing their terrorist brothers involved in suicide attack on General Post Office (GPO) chowk that had left 22 people, including 19 police officials, dead and several others injured. They have full confidence in the Courts. http://tribune.com.pk/story/469165/court-acquits-accused-in-2008-gpo-suicide-attack-case/
But the soldiers will rise against all odds including the resistance and support from terror friendly political Parties and those who had been standing with the terrorists and facilitating them in the name of rule of law. People of Pakistan are with the Soldiers of Pakistan.
Very sad to hear about the death of these poor who had a family to support. Now ban cycles too. How can peace prevail in province when the name of ministers are taken as supporter of terrorists
Salute to FC jawans! The whole nation is behind you guys in fighting terrorism/extremism
Zia's ideological & political children need to be defeated.
Foreign hand? Third hand or Foreign Force?
why blast on day of kasab hanging ? i see some outside hand here
