The Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) candidate Khadija Waran has won the NA-184 Bahawalpur by-elections. According to unofficial results, she secured 75,507 votes against her Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) rival Najeebuddin Owaisi, who polled 48,145 votes.

NA-184 had fallen vacant after PPP MNA Amir Yar Waran was declared ineligible to hold the seat by the Lahore High Court for possessing a fake degree. Waran chose to resign and the PPP gave the party ticket to his wife Khadija Waran for contesting Saturday’s by-polls.

The polling was marred by clashes between supporters of both the parties. Four persons were taken into police custody, including a Naib Nazim of the area. Polling was briefly suspended at one station.

Sultan Ahmed. | 14 years ago | Reply It is matter of concern, what is behind this defeat, notwithstanding the fact that Muslim League has greater popularity than PPP. Not more than months, governor Punjab leveled a allegation against a provincial minister,saying that he is involved in highest objectionable activities. For example,contact with terrorists and sheltering to grabbers, some photos were presented by him as a documentary evidence, in which the said minister was addressing the public meeting and the persons relating defunct organization occupied seats on the stage. Allegation counter allegation, a sequence has still underway. After suicide attack in Lahore in which loss of life and property taken place, governor has begun his campaign against the minister with fresh arguments and now looks successful in his efforts. Now people of Punjab are compelled to think that the aforesaid minister may be involved in such activities as alleged by the governor in this way Muslim League (N) is losing its popularity in the province.
