Police in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) arrested Mohammad Zafar and his wife Zaheen for the October 29 attack on their daughter Anusha, 15, who died in hospital two days later after suffering horrific acid burns.
So-called "honour" attacks are common in Pakistan. Rights activists say more than 900 women were murdered last year after being accused of bringing shame on the family in some way.
Speaking from their police cells, the father told the BBC they had warned Anusha before about looking at boys, while the mother described how her daughter had begged for forgiveness.
"She said, 'I didn't do it on purpose, I won't do it again," the mother, whose own arm bore an injury from the acid, told the BBC.
"By then I had thrown the acid. It was her destiny to die this way."
The parents waited two days to take Anusha to hospital. A doctor told AFP the teenager arrived in a "very critical condition" with almost 70 percent burns.

Why are we not discussing regulation of Acid sales? Its about time, the government makes acid less readily accessible to civilians. Acid has been and is being used as a weapon in our country for a while now. It's about time, its sales are regulated. Only licensed dealers should be allowed to sell acid to licensed clients. It shouldn't just be sitting around for anyone/everyone, child or adult, to buy. One cannot do more than grieve for this poor little girl for the atrocious and violent death she met at the hands of her cruel parents. As for everyone who's bringing up religion, this has nothing to do with religion at all! Not even this cruel woman justified her heinous act in the name of religion...why are we bringing religion into it? Clearly, anyone who knows any religion at all, knows that piety is utterly opposed to cruelty. If you have to talk about religion, then talk about how we must institute Jihad against such heinous acts. As Muslims, we are required to speak out against, condemn, and oppose such acts. It is also our Prophet's sunnah that he saved young girls from the cruelty of barbaric parents.
Any latest information on this? have the parents been arrested? This is the first time of its time we have heard this has been happened in Kashmir?
What are our politicians doing in AJK ? We need women protection there aswell. Women need support in terms of NGO workshops and women projects.
@Akshay, India: My point is who is giving them directions that such an act is allowed. Where are they getting their guidance, is it society, their relatives or a religion. I do not think any religion in this world allows such an act. Plus, in this instance the daughter was LOOKING at boys so a such an extreme step needs to be dealt in a proper way so that no one in the future could dare to do such an act. Lastly, I am not a scholar but I know this all religion in this world teaches us to love each other, respect each other and guidelines on how to live our lives. Peace to all.
@Khurram Awan: unfortunately majority of these 'honor killings' or acid attacks in the US or UK are done by either muslims or indians. It is sad but most of this is done by Arabs and South Asians. You can read this article: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57409395-504083/honor-killing-under-growing-scrutiny-in-the-u.s/
However, the difference is that no matter what these barbarians are brought to justice. If our authorities had any sense of justice we too would be able to control this madness. Unfortunately our government and our people do not care about each other. Unfortunately, we are nothing but talk.
When will lawyers be showering rose petals on the mother?
Such people should not be allowed to have children, they are better off sterilized.
@Khurram Awan: I challenge you to prove that there were more acid attacks in the last 5 years either the US or the UK than in Pakistan. If you can't, I hope you would be decent enough to accept your mistake in the comments section.
It should also be the destiny of the parents to know what acid feels like. An eye for an eye!
@Concerned Citizen: What this has to do with Quran?
@Concerned Citizen: Why do we have to bring up Quran and religion in every discussion. It would be simpler to use your head.
@Khurram Awan: Unfortunately, Crimes against women are common in all civilization including USA and other western countries. The major difference is what law and order agencies do with the accused once a crime is reported. In the west they are prosecuted to the teeth and there conviction rate is extremely high. In our countries the last line of the news item is always and the accused is absconding and usually are never prosecuted. We have long way to go and first step is to acknowledge the wrong.
@ Khurram Awan. Acid attacks in America (I have no idea about UK as I don't live there) are EXTREMELY rare. I have actually only seen in the news here 1 acid attack years ago (wherein it turned out the woman had thrown the acid on herself and lied about being attached), and 1 recently where a father poured it on his daughter...and I read multiple news sources daily.
In America there are many cases of Battery acid thrown on Women Faces and in UK too but CNN and BBC are here in Pakistan to demonize Pakistan and BBC always took negative news from Pakistan as a part of their agenda to make them feel good and CNN do the same while they never report their own domestic cases like that.. A small article for So called Religious and Secular bashers that these events occur everywhere but in Pakistan our media took the responsibility of demonizing us beyond belief along with TOI, CNN and BBC. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2196130/Woman-wakes-coma-70-body-covered-burns-boyfriend-douses-acid.html
How can a person with any kind of soul actually do such a thing to someone they've loved and nurtured? It is incomprehensible to me. What kind of a place values honor more than human life? I'll bet even your God is shaking his head in disbelief.
I hope this evil woman repents sometime? there must be a death penalty afterall, though it would be much less painful for this woman to die than what she condemned her daughter to. i wonder how many crimes against women in Pakistan are actually triggered by women themselves? fate, eh?
@M Usama Kabbir: good news
If there is slightest respect for human rights in Pakistan then I shall request the Apex Court that hang this parents immediately. Her mother is nothing but a demon.Sorry to state this is the fate of muslim women in Pakistan. Pakistan can no longer claim that this is a land for the pure which once the great Jinnah dreamt.
Over understanding and addiction of religion and lack of logic along with Arabian culture led to this incident .
@Cool Dude: @Hamza: Saffiya, Maria the Copt, Juwarriya, the assassinated poetess? Half inheritance, half worth of testimony? It has everything to do with women being treated as property by people whose morals are inspired by the dogma.
@Concerned Citizen: The parents killed their child and are now killers. You want them to be killed same way, then you are a killer like them too? Don´t you feel vomiting for your insane thoughts? We should nevvvvvver kill or harm any of our fellow humans.
@M Usama Kabbir: thats because your faith and knowledge is weak....this is a cultural problem....nothing to do with religion. If you had studied your religion right, you wouldn't have made this statement.
Cruel women, not worthy of being called a mother.
God created human with devil`s traits and killer instincts. How many times we kill someone at least in our thoughts?
@Lala Gee:
Replace "Asian" with "ARAB" and add "MADRASA" before "education".
Then only your post would be true reflection of your mindset and the reality.
@M Usama Kabbir: What this incident has to do with religion? Though any religion won’t be affected at all by ‘irreparable loss’ of fading faith on part of anybody.
@M Usama Kabbir: This has nothing to do with religion. Lack of proper Islamic education is the main reason behind such events. It's a misconception on everyone's behalf. You do know that regard and respect for women and their rights was one of the most important points said by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) during his last sermon.
nothing wrong in that.............she is following the principles of islam and koran............
@Rehan: NO Rehan, It does NOT. It represents a small part of Pakistan. Such things are found in every country. So stop being an Imbecile and stop ruining the image of Pakistan as a whole. If this is how Pakistan is, then I think you along with every other Pakistani should be arrested or blacklisted for being part of such a violent and heinous nation ! People like you are equally responsible for ruining the image of Pakistan as are those who commit these horrendous activities. Regards, Hamza
@antony: I think Indians should refrain from commenting on this subject. Your comment is so unwarranted considering such cases happen in India too (Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab) thanks to the Khap Panchayats.
Lets hang our heads in shame that we humans are worse than animals. Praying for the departed soul.
even animals would have more sense than these!!! these people are mentally unstable!!!
Kashmir acid attack takes the front page but thousands killed by Indian army and its atrocities never dont!!
Speech less!
@ Rehan
These kind of things happen all over the world not just Pakistan. Please come out of your ignorance.. even in advanced countries like the UK there are multiple cases every year where parents have killed their off springs (Do I need to remind you of The Fritzl case). These kind of nut cases are everywhere be it Pakistan or Europe or Americas!
It's disgusting to see this happening but please keep Pakistan out of it - Love your country and try to make people more aware so that we can put an end to such barbaric actions.
STONEAGE AND STONEHEARTED PARENTS.CHILDREN ARE VERY COSTLY GODGIVEN CREATURES.THE GIRL SHOULD BE SAVED.GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAKE INTEREST.
ET kindly tell me where in the BBC report is it mentioned, "while the mother described how her daughter had begged for forgiveness"
Kindly stop adding lines to spice up you article!!
Even an animal wouldn't do it with her offspring
@Maher: While ET is checking on your behalf if she was real daughter or not I suggest they should check whether she was human or not? What difference does it make if she was real daughter or not? End of the day she was a human being and some ones daughter. Human life on this earth is because of this kind of humans or creatures.
In human behavior, worse than animals. The parents deserve to die a worse death !!
By every passing day my belief in this so called thing called 'Religion' is fading away.
Honor killing are just tip of the iceberg writes Aruna Papp. There is so much more abuse and torture going on that we do not her about. .Honor based violence is an epidemic which includes locking up the victims, denying her social contact, verbally and physically abusing her. These things are happening in our own backyard. http://www.myvirtualpaper.com/doc/Desi-News-Corp/edesinov2012/2012103101/#28
@Thor: I agree Stone age has arrived.
@Concerned Citizen: So if it was written in Quran, it would have been justified!!!!
As a regular reader of ET ,I was shocked if this was happening in our kashmir ( Indian) and had a slight relief that this side looks sane still.
Even though in Islamic and Asian cultures, one is expected to respect the religious, social, and cultural bounds, but killing someone for this kind of rebellious mistake is just cruelty, not allowed in any religion, let alone in Islam. Illiteracy and ignorance coupled with narrow mindedness is the main reason for these brutalities, and cannot be eliminated in a year or two. It will take a few generations to change the mindset through continuous education and awareness campaigns along with severe punishments.
Calling them animals would be a disrespect to animals
Desitny, what a shame. How can a mother through acid of her child. Shame on her. ET please check she was her REAL DAUGHTER or NOT
This is Pakistan. Stop living in a fantasy land. This story represents the real Pakistan. Regards, Rehan
Barbarians - I hope they die a death a thousand times worse than that of their daughter.
I would want to know where in Quran are parents allowed to kill their children in such horrific way. If not I would like to see them killed the same way by acid.
Stoneage mother! she should be hanged for seeing the boy looked at his girl too! destiny?!
