KARACHI:

A police officer’s wife suffering from severe burn wounds was found inside her house in Malir, according to the Saudabad police.

Tauqeer Khatoon was taken to the Burns Centre at Civil Hospital and doctors said that over 90% of her body was burnt and that she was in critical condition.

Tauqeer told the police that her husband, police constable Abul Hassan, was a suspect. In her statement she said that Abul wanted to get married for the third time, but she refused to give him permission. In retaliation, he set her on fire inside the house and escaped.

The accusations were, however, denied by Abul and he stated that he was not even present in the house when the incident occurred. “I returned home when the neighbours made me aware of the situation,” he claimed.

Malir SP Qayyum Patafi told The Express Tribune that Abul had been arrested, but there was a lack of evidence of how the incident occurred. “Tauqeer said that Abul set her on fire and he says that she attempted to commit suicide by setting herself on fire. It is all very confusing,” said Patafi. He added that the case has been taken up by the investigation wing.
