As secretary general of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), I knew I had a lot of responsibilities. After consultation, I called an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on November 7. The PFUJ vowed to defend press freedom against the military dictator, as it had done on previous occasions in Pakistan’s short history.
In the next 90 days, Musharraf’s government issued some very amazing notices to the channels and newspapers, copies of which are still in my record and for the first time would like to share with the people.
Two major cases were registered against the PFUJ leaders; one on charges of sedition and another charging the PFUJ leadership, 300 other journalists and members of the civil society with trying to enter the Prime Minister House by force. The FIR was later sealed.
All this was followed by numerous notices to newspapers and TV channels. Many people thought that General Musharraf banned the media on November 3, 2007 but the process had started much earlier when on September 28, channels received a show-cause notice stating that “No programme shall be aired which contains, (a) aspersions against the judiciary and the armed forces (b) any material amounting to contempt of court (c) contain any abusive comments that when taken in context, tend to or are likely to expose any individual or group or a class of individual to hatred or contempt.”
We knew that the ‘emergency plus’ was not against political parties but against the judiciary and the media, the two most emerging institutions in the post-March 9, 2007 struggle in support of the then-deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Chaudhry.
We gave a 24-hour deadline to Musharraf’s government to lift the ban, failing which, we would start a protest campaign. By December, the journalists’ movement gained enough momentum to force the government to start reviewing the ban.
Not many, but some of the owners responded to us in a positive manner. By January, several TV channel owners agreed to our demand and signed a highly embarrassing ‘Undertaking’ of Pemra. The PFUJ had won the struggle.
Looking back, on November 3, I was threatened by arrest for protesting by an intelligence official. Today, I would be threatened by death if I raise my voice for greater press freedom. During that time, I was threatened by the agencies. Today, it would be the agencies as well as the extremists. But, even though the threat perception has changed, the struggle must go on.
In 63 years, over a hundred journalists have paid with their lives, several have seen prison and three have been brutally murdered for raising their voices in the media against sensitive issues which the establishment does not want to shed light on. We are ready for yet more activism but will not surrender.
Long live the struggle for press freedom.

Geo Musharraf.. 88 days is nothing.. You should stop making a joke out of it and thank the democratic general for supporting you big time!!
Government,SC/judiciary,ET/ all newspapers,TV channels etc silence opinion that they do not like under the pretext of National Interest/ ridiculing judiciary/contempt of court/ comment moderation etc etc. Why single out Musharraf?. In fact, as pointed out in earlier comments, that, he is the one who gave the present unprecedented freedom to the media both electronic and print.
@abid mohiuddin:
Teri yaad aa'i chaley jaaney keh baad.
Mr.Abbas, the author : Why are you opening your mouth now. Musharraf did everything to liberate the media and you guys are simply " Ehsan faramosh"
Musharraf is the only leader who did everything in the greatest interest of Pakistan .He could have done some mistakes but overall the glass was more than half full We miss him and pray for a safe and quick return IA Musharraf Zindabad
@dingdong:
hahaha...so true.
@meekal a ahmed:
musharrafs inner circle is well known. he relied on trusted lieutenants in the army (i.e. corp commanders) and for many of his political decisions relied on a wide array of advisers (including the chaudhry's of gujrat, gen hamid javed, mushahid hussain, tariq aziz). these were generally honest and well meaning advisers. bad decisions can be made by good people, and vice versa.
@naeem khan Manhattan,Ks:
nonsense. if you have proof of this bring it, otherwise stop slandering individuals.
While you were raising your voice against Musharraf, your younger brother was ordering you to shut it sitting as DG ISPR....awkward no?
Mazhar Abba I don't agree with you.Actions speak louder than words.And what sacrifices.what consensus? The only consensus in last ten years in the media is- let there be no consensus.Isn't it that there is more confusions and uncertainity than ten years ago.
Deal with LHC, IHC, and SC first, and then talk about agencies. It is political government you people exploit and punch over and over again on the instructions of the same agencies and order of your beloved judges. In Pakistan media has never been independent and there is a very little possibility for it to attain that independence. Same is the case with the judges, now they dismiss the Chief Executive of the country, talk of constitutionality of the governments (both federal and provincial) ironically when there is no such prayer. Please stop shedding crocodile tears; I know agencies and your independent media and judges are on the same page, anti-politics and anti-democracy.
Musharraf had formed an image while as a young boy in Turkey what he would like his country to become. To turn that image in reality, after taking the reins he realised how dependent he was on bureaucracy, advisers etc. How much did he succeed in implementing his desire to reform, history may judge? . The politicians on the other hand have a different desire, want to see their bank balance grow.
It is the corrupt and biased media who is working against Pakistan's interest. Musharraf freed the media and got victim of it. More or less everyone in the media is on someones' payroll.
Musharraf is the best leader Pakistan ever had. Wish him to come back and put the country to the progess.
Mazhar Abbas, How many Salim Shehzads are in pipeline to demonstrate their freedom or courage of expressions.After ten years of media's so-called independance there is one consensus-let there be no consensus. How many debates on the need of secular constitution.strategic depth policy.ever expanding nuclearisation,blasphemy laws,citizens called minority on the basis of faith and not on other social factors.Unfortunately there is none in the real sense.
@Raza Khan: "Yes give Devil the due share! Musharraf freed the press otherwise we still would be watching PTV." Musharaf and his partners freed the media for opposition Benazir NS and not for deep state. When Musharaf became useless for establishment he sttod in the catagory of politicians and hence faced thhe wrath of media.
Yes give Devil the due share! Musharraf freed the press otherwise we still would be watching PTV.
Journey to progressive Pakistan was halted on 9 March, 2007 by an irresponsible media who did unprecedented coverage to a deposed CJ. When media becomes a party in a political move than its silencing is justified.
He was also the one who allowed the media the current freedom it enjoys. When people say the media revolution was going to happen to anyway they are dead wrong.
"Looking back, on November 3, I was threatened by arrest for protesting by an intelligence official. Today, I would be threatened by death if I raise my voice for greater press freedom." The problem is that you neglected to name the intelligence official, if he threaten you then he should be exposed regardless who he is. This is the main reason that our intelligence services are working outside the law of the land.Expose them and let their neighbors know what kind of people they are and why they have the audacity to threaten , kidnap and murder the citizens of Pakistan. It was Mush and his intelligence outfit which allowed the Americans to operate the drones from Pakistani bases to kill it's own citizens and then they claim to be the guardian of the people.
Country is for the general masses victims of different powerful vested interests. General Masses have become poor and naturally Media and lawyers along with Judges have become rich. Now country does not belong to the masses but Vested Interests. Great Struggle and congratulations. You are definitely a Hero.
I would argue that media has played a very irresponsible role by misinforming the public. It needs a code of ethics and a very powerful watchdog to make sure that national interest is protected.
It would be interesting to know who were the people advising him? In all these cases, I have wondered, who are these demented individuals who make up the "inner-circle"? Yahya, Zia, BB, NS, Mush......
We are very proud of journalists like you! Honest, above the board, intelluctual, fprward looking, progressive & can continue. Hope out TV achorpersons & journalists follow your example.
