Rehabilitation: ‘Jail a route to spiritual awakening’

9,600 inmates in prisons across the world had embraced Islam in the last five years, says Abdul Hakim Malik.

Prison provides an opportunity to reflect on one’s mistakes and seek guidance and repentance through religion. This was the view of speakers at a seminar ‘Duties of Prisoners’, arranged by Daily Express, in Multan District Jail.


Abdul Hakim Malik, managing director of Islamic Research Foundation, said most people end up in jail because of intolerance and aggression, attitudes discourages by Islam. He said prisoners can prepare for a better life after jail through learning about Islam. According to him, 9,600 inmates in prisons across the world had embraced Islam, in the last five years, after studying books on Islam.

IG Prisons, Mian Farooq Nazir said that prisoners were as respectable as other citizens. He pointed out that during the month of Ramazan Rs150 million had been collected for payment of penalties, an indication that there is no scarcity of good people in the society.

In the end, copies of Quranic Encyclopedia were distributed.
