Rs1.5m bail for young driver who killed pedestrians

A young man, who was arrested in an accident that killed four people, was released on bail worth Rs1.5 million.

KARACHI: A young man, who was arrested after his car was involved in an accident that killed four people Tuesday, was released on bail worth Rs1.5 million on Thursday.

Judicial Magistrate South Abu Ali Jatoi released Saad Khan, who is the son of an FIA deputy director Athar Ali Khan.

The man who was said to be in the passenger seat, Munir Mengal, was released without any charges. The police did not send either men for a medico-legal examination.

According to one version of events, an FIR, No 466/10, was filed early Wednesday morning. But police station records show that the FIR was filed two hours after the accident, which took place Tuesday evening around 8 pm.

Because Saad’s family was unable to immediately present his driving license, the FIR was filed under section 320. The license was submitted Wednesday evening. According to investigation officer Aslam Kolachi, the license was issued on August 9, 2010 and has yet to check out with the license office records.

According to IO Kolachi, Saad was earlier on held on charges of possessing an illegal weapon. But his family presented an arms license, after which an investigation was carried out against Saad under section 144.

According to one version, the accident took place when two cars, allegedly racing one another, arrived at the Khayaban-e-Shamsheer and Shujaat traffic signal. A motorcycle suddenly came in front of them, causing the cars to swerve out of control in an effort to avoid crashing into him. One of the cars collided with a pole while the other crashed into the footpath where people were waiting for the bus.

Two women and a man were mowed down and at least one child was injured. One of the victims was 40-year-old Sabiha and the other was 26-year-old Saima. The man who was killed has yet to be identified.

Sabiha’s brother-in-law Amir said that she was a cook in a house in DHA. She is survived by five children, the youngest is just three months old. He said that after the accident, he has been trying to meet the investigation officer and Darakhshan SHO Azam Gopang.

Adnan | 14 years ago | Reply because its all LIE!!!!! i am a witness of this accident i was there and saw everything pretty pretty vividly. Corolla was going straight and civic was coming from the right hand side, it after iftar that the signals at shamsheer just blank out so both the cars were on their ways just when a motorbike showed up CIVIC due to over speed and no conscience of the driver to "wait see and then move" blindedly ran into corolla which in turn spinned and hit the bike and footpath. People came running from all sides and the civic's driver with no sense of humanity escaped where as young guys in corolla stayed. I heard people suggesting them to escape, vanish, disappear but they kept insisting "Why?? what hev we done? our car is obliterated my dad is going to kill me" you people should have seen those innocent faces. Then our illiterate police showed up and just to show people that they ACTUALLY WORK, without inquiring anf fathoming the incident they arrested the innocent boys present. No question about civic were raised and surprisingly overnight civic was released from the police station as well....where was police then?? Money is surely very alluring..... To create hype and add spice Media dragged the driver's father name, now what does he have to do with all this?? but to grab the attention of our ignorant people media played this tactic which actually worked. Nobody cares about those innocent souls who are behind bars all everyone is saying is sentence them to deathe blah blah blah it seems as the guy is paying for his father being in government. Please people let us not get carried away by emotions and fabricated stuff try delving in the reality and think of thoe guys who are suffering the torture of this grave conviction something they havent even done esp their families what would they be going through, 1.5 million is not a petty amount..... think of it and jare and jolt your own sense of judgement God Bless Cheers
