Dozens more were wounded as the bomb ripped through the crowd of worshippers in Maymana city in Faryab province and there were fears the death toll could rise.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but suicide bombings are a favourite weapon of Taliban trying to topple the Western-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.
The attacker was wearing a police uniform when he blew himself up at the entrance to the city's packed Eid Gah mosque, deputy provincial governor Abdul Satar Barez told AFP.
"Our latest death toll shows 41 deaths, and that might rise," he said.
"Nineteen were members of the security forces, including police, army and intelligence agents. Seventeen were civilians and five children are also among the dead."
Barez, like many other provincial officials, was at the scene at the time of the bombing and described the horror of the blast in the midst of a religious celebration.
"We had just finished Eidul Azha prayers and we were congratulating and hugging each other," Barez said.
"Suddenly a big explosion took place and the area was full of dust and smoke and body parts of police and civilians were all over the place. It was a very powerful explosion."
One eyewitness, Sayed Moqeed, described the bomber as appearing to be in his early teens.
"Suddenly I heard a very big explosion," he said. "Everywhere were pieces of bodies, hands and limbs. The suicide attacker was in police uniform, he looked to be around 14 or 15 years old."
Karzai strongly condemned the attack, calling the perpetrators "the enemies of Islam and humanity".
"Those who take the happiness of Muslims during Eid days cannot be called human and Muslim," he said.
Northern Afghanistan is relatively peaceful, with the Taliban, who were ousted from power in a US-led invasion in 2001, concentrating their operations in the south and east of the country.

@S K Afridi: You are among the many Pakistanis who are inclined to blame US, RAW, Afghans etc for militancy in Pakistan little realising that the monsters created by your esteemed establishment to liberate Kashmir and end foreign occupation in Afghanistan have grown too big and are taking the state head on to promote their own agenda of ruling the respective country. These so called jihadis are killing anyone who opposes their religious ideology ie implementation of sharia in Pakistan or confront them on their known stand on education to girls eg Malala's incident, destroying schools, military fighting them eg killing and beheading of soldiers etc. Taleban spokespersons have several times justified killings of innocent people to stop army operations against them and whether or not Islamic teaching allows them to carry out these barbarities or all killings are handiwork of the foreign agencies is left to your and others discretion who still refuse to believe or admit that Muslims can other Muslims. Regards
@S K Afridi: Wake up from your slumber brother. India has 180 million Muslims and if they want to kill some they need not go to Afghanistan to do it. They have provided $ 2 billion in Aid, common sense should have hinted that no one gives such large sums to enemies. First get rid of the Terrorists from your soil before throwing stones at others. Kindly learn to separate fact from fiction and truth from propaganda. The World is not living a dream as Pakistan is.
@S K Afridi: And of course you can provide some credible proof for your "terrorism nurtured and supported by Afghan Intelligence, RAW and CIA" comment! Otherwise we may all just believe you to be but just another conspiracy theorist blaming the world for all of Pakistan's ills!
@Jat: Right from the day one when Pakistan came into being, Afghanistan in unholy connivance with India created difficulties for Pakistan. It always accommodated Pakistan's dissident elements fugitive Pakistani criminals on its soil. Even today many Taliban groups who are fighting against Pakistan Army including those who have attacked innocent Malala are the revered guests of Afghan intelligence and RAW. Pakistan on the other hand has acted as Afghanistan's strategic depth for the last 35 years. Millions of Afghan refugees are still living in Pakistan. Many of the prominent Afghan leaders still have their properties and business in Pakistan. Even today Pakistan is providing life line to Afghanistan through our port of Karachi. I think Afghans will be highly ungrateful people if they instead of appreciating Pakistan's sacrifices for them, point an accusing finger towards Pakistan for incidents on account of their own home grown terrorism. You are absolutely right that Afghanistan is a graveyard of empires but this time it is the turn of Afghanistan because this time the Afghans are themselves busy in digging their own grave.
@Feroz: ITS V BAD ...V SAD..ANY1 DID IT IS NOT MUSLIM.....SCND NO1 KNOWS WHO DID IT AND WHY BUT U PPL STARTED BLAMING TALIBAN AND PAKISTAN...WHO KNOWS WHO DID IT..WHAT WAS THE REASON BEHIND IT..PAKISTAN IS ALSO SUFFRING FROM TERRORISM..WE SHOULD FIND THE HIDDEN ENEMY THE BLACK SHEEP....THE PPL WHO DNT WANT PEACE IN AFG AND PAK....
First and foremost, our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go to the friends and families of those killed in this heinous act of terror. And we wish a fast and speedy recovery to those who were injured. We will not let this act of terror deter us from achieving our peace objectives in the region. We will continue to fight those who are looking to plague the region with their acts of terror. This is what the ISAF commander, Gen. John Allen, said:
"I condemn this heinous act, which is an affront to human life, to religious devotion and to the peaceful aspirations of the Afghan people. I offer my condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed or injured, and the resources of ISAF to help however we can. This violence undertaken at a place of worship, and during Eid, once again shows the insurgency's callous hypocrisy and disregard for religion and faith. In my recent remarks to commemorate this most holy Muslim observance of Eid al-Adha, I spoke of the admiration I hold for the Afghan people's desire for peace. Today's tragic attack makes this feeling all the more poignant as we -- the Coalition and the Afghan people -- stand together in tireless pursuit of peace."
@sunny: 41 people, including 5 children are killed, scores injured - but you find Zaidu disgusting. A typical bigoted Pakistani response.
@Zaidu urf Zaheel Hamid: You are disgusting even in sarcasm.
Happy Eid-Ul-Azha...from all peace loving Pakistani Muslims to our Afghanistan brothers...Happy Qurbani....Ahdullilah ! Allah, the merciful will now be definitely pleased...
@Dost: My thoughts and prayers are for an enlightened, progressive and prosperous Afghanistan. May those who have cast an evil eye and tormented its people for decades find justice at the hands of the Almighty. Remember your friends and your enemies, not by their words but by their actions.
@Hasan Mehmood: "The fact remains that these butchers have killed more civilians in Afghanistan than ISAF/NATO/USA forces combined."
Please explain this to Imran Khan and his backers, the Deep State.
The fact remains that these butchers have killed more civilians in Afghanistan than ISAF/NATO/USA forces combined. I tried very hard but could not find a similar example of freedom fighting force in history. Unfortunately no one highlights this fact being politically incorrect to do so. At least NATO carries out inquiry in such killings at its hand (howsoever sham), but Taliban don't even bother with that.
My condolences to the families of the dead and wounded. may they have the strength to live through this utter tragedy ( man-made !!)
Dear Pakistanis,
This is what the (Good) Taliban are doing in Afghanistan. They are killing us in our mosques on Eid day. And you would think that Afghan people (Pashtoon, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek) will forget Pakistani support to this evil force called Taliban.
So this is what Imran Khan calls jihad in Afghanistan. I hope people like Imran Khan and his ilk wake up and see the writing on the wall.
Its Imran Khan's Jihad.
@imkarachi: "Mission accomplished. Perfect execution by India. Perfect planning by USA."
You can fool your own countrymen brother, but no longer the Afghan people.
Mission accomplished. Perfect execution by India. Perfect planning by USA.
No blasphemy protests now?
Afghanistan, the graveyard of countless empires, getting ready to bury Pakistan.
And the experts say Taliban wont be able to takeover Afghanistan again. Isnt it worst than taking over Afghanistan????
The popularity rating of Pakistanis just went up by 10% in Afghanistan. Afghanistan, the fifth state of Pakistan, the strategic backyard of Pakistan, the firing range of Pakistan Army, the training ground for Pakistan's freedom fighters, the field laboratory for Pakistan's latest IEDs, the strategic corridor for Pakistan's megalomania, the butchery for Pakistan's Kasabs and finally, the opium den for Pakistan's military dreams.
Very unfortunate incident which must be condemned. Those terrorists who have killed innocent Muslims on the auspicious day of Eid ul Adha cannot claim to be Muslims. They are criminals and must be punished for their crimes.
This is a dastardly attack on a mosque by elements patronized by the Pakistani State. How such criminals can fool the people by claiming they want to bring Islamic rule, defies imagination. Islam needs major reforms --- as a first step anyone killing a human should be excommunicated without any why, when, if and but.
Strict security measures should be taken in Pakistan to avoid any untoward similar incident(s) during Eid-ul-Azha prayers.
