However, no one can dispute that we are in the midst of an unending war of terrorism, more so from our own territory. It is no doubt our war and we have no option but to win and repulse the enemy Taliban from the soil of Pakistan. The barbaric and dastardly attack on brave young innocent student of Swat, Malala Yousufzai, infused with the irresistible desire to acquire knowledge, cannot be ignored or regarded as an ordinary incident of violence.
Mere condemnation even in forceful terms of the incident or rich tributes to this brave girl of Pakistan who has become pride of the nation are also not enough. This ought to be taken as a national symbol of a turning point of our history. Such continuing barbaric incidents have given more severe jolt to the nation than any other earthquakes suffered by us.
It is high time we must wake up and decide as to how long we are prepared to allow the prevailing spate of terrorism, bigotry, un-checked and innumerable murders of the Muslims by Taliban. We must call spade a spade. Who can deny that it is the various groups of Taliban who have been consistently killing thousands of our armed forces, members of law-enforcement agencies, innocent unarmed citizens including children, women and girls, destroying our schools and colleges, destroying our economy, institutions, religious, political and cultural norms, values, believes, rites and places of worship, defaming the very name of Islam, harming security and image of Pakistan, they cannot be termed anything other than “the worst number one enemy of Pakistan, Islam and Muslims.
There is no grey area. Those who refuse to condemn Taliban, their attacks on our armed forces, innocent citizens and territories, I am afraid they should realize that they are supporters of the enemies of Pakistan. Those who try to justify terrorism of Taliban on the pretext of drone attacks by Nato forces conveniently forget that Taliban were openly indulging in all sorts of terrorist oppressive and militant activities within Pakistan even before 9/11.
We condemn with all the force at our command the drone attacks, which are most inhuman, imprudent and counter-productive as well as commit breach of sovereignty of Pakistan. This does not and cannot lend any justification, by stretch of any logic or reason, to the unending spate of barbarism unleashed by the Taliban in Pakistan. May I also ask from such persons that if by any chance drone attacks by Nato/US forces are stopped, will Taliban stop their most vicious barbaric terrorism in Pakistan? Will there be surrender of arms and ceasefire by Taliban?
Some analysts urge negotiations with Taliban. Negotiation is two-way traffic. Have Taliban ever made any sincere desire for negotiations and peaceful coexistence? Have Taliban ever realized that the largest number of the Muslims have been murdered by them in the Pakistan due to their terrorism? What should be the agenda of negotiations? Have Taliban spelled out their agenda? In my sincere opinion the real agenda and object of Taliban is not the drone attacks but to Talibanise Pakistan, takeover our territory, technology, resources, institutions and above all the nuclear weapons and technology.
Strangely, our civil and military establishments as well as the US and local intelligence agencies had initially provided space to Taliban covertly and overtly both in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The US and our civil and military establishments provided help, cooperation and assistance to Taliban in all forms to ensure establishment of their rule in Afghanistan. Pakistani establishment had fallen for this bait by supporting Taliban under a most preposterous, misconceived and counter-productive dilution of using Afghanistan as the strategic depth of Pakistan. Which is and was wrong. It is still not too late to come out of these dilutions of Islamic crescent.
Instead of protecting interest and objects of Taliban, we must for a change give top most priority to our own national interest, which is in conflict with the interests of Taliban.
It is not relevant as to who is a good Taliban or bad Taliban, who is Punjabi or Afghani Taliban or any other brand of Taliban. The only logical litmus test to distinguish between a Taliban and non-Taliban is “are they followers of the religious belief, style of governance, political, economic, cultural, religious or moral values promoted by the regime of Mullah Omar in Afghanistan?” He had denied education to girls, destroyed schools, colleges, instrument of music, killed singers, shut barbers shops, and stopped even men from wearing shorts while playing sports. In short, Mullah Omar wanted to push Pakistan into the Stone Age.
One of the gravest point of concern is for the entire nation is that there are many bearded and clean-shaven supporters of the Taliban who are rapidly emerging with a show of force. Much to my astonishment, ostensibly many people from educated classes are among these appeasers. The rally which was apparently taken out at the cost of hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars in the name of peace and few weeks before the US presidential election (covered extensively by the western media), in Dera Ismail Khan only, proved to be counter-productive, as the Taliban were encouraged by this rally to launch their barbaric premeditated attack on Malala Yousufzai in Swat within hours of the end of the so-called “peace rally” staged by the supporters of the Taliban.
It is shocking and incomprehensible that not only the leaders and participants of this “peace rally”, but also a political entity in Rawalpindi close to GHQ, who had conferred the title of “Ameerul Momineen” to a person like Mullah Omar, are keeping mum against the atrocities, barbarism and terrorist attacks of Taliban on our soil and our citizens. It is an unpardonable act not to condemn such innumerable barbaric attacks of Taliban against our people and territory of Pakistan.
The civil and military establishment, political parties, religious groups and all sections of the society have to once and for all time to come announce in loud and clear terms that Pakistan was not created for Taliban or their supporters. They must announce convincingly with conviction that they regard Taliban as Enemy Number One of Pakistan and they are determined to repulse and eliminate them from every nook and corner of Pakistan, so that the country, as envisaged by our founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah, survives under the principles of democracy with autonomy to the federating units, freedom, equality, tolerance, social justice, equal rights, status and opportunities in a society free from exploitation and discrimination, wherein freedom of thought, expression, belief, faith, worship, or association shall be freely and fearlessly professed and exercised by Muslims and non-Muslims and above all protection of the life and property of the citizens shall be ensured as guaranteed by the 1973 Constitution framed by the representatives of the people for the people by the people of Pakistan and not by Taliban.

Unfortunately for Pakistan and the rest of the world, the majority of Pakistanis appear to either a) embrace the Taliban goals and methods in the misguided hope that they will resurrect some kind of Islamic empire and restore power and glory to Islam; or b) continue to believe, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, that the Taliban are not responsible for any atrocities, and that all of the violence and terrorism is plotted, financed and carried out by agents of the CIA/RAW/Zionist conspiracy against Pakistan. Those Pakistanis who want to live in a modern, tolerant world where people are free to practice or not practice the religion of their choice without interference from others appear to be a shrinking minority.
@Feroz
An eloquently written post, which succinctly describes the political and social morass plaguing Pakistan.
Nothing new the same old rhetoric.... We know that majority of the nation is fade up of these stone age barbarians but despite of being in minority are overpowering the whole nation...on the other hand nobody is giving practical solution to get ride the country of this nuisance once and for all... secondly it is really tragic to note that the so called intelligentsia of this country-which includes this write as well, have always been inconsistent in their stance on this particular issue. on one hand they want the secular political forces to get united to stem out extremism from the country but at the same time they leave no stone unturned to weaken the current fragile coalition government some times due to their romanticism with the confused policies aka Maulana Imran and with our over-active Judiciary and at times blindly joining the Zardari bashing bandwagon just to earn cheap publicity and remain alive in the media lime light... Instead of confusing the common man like me, our intelligentsia, especially the media, seriously need to be clear and consistent in their views and stance.
Very well-said Khan sahab.
Iqbal, the time for ingenious arguments and subterfuge is long gone. Pakistan supported the Taliban monsters when they were wreaking havoc on the poor and unfortunate citizens of Afghanistan, even taking pride in the humiliation of its people. When the opportunity arose to slay these monsters as they crossed into Pakistan after 2001, they were fed, sheltered and protected. No attention was ever paid to the fact that most supporters of the Taliban were Pakistani citizens, not the hapless Afghans who read their true colors and still continue to be terrorized by them. Good and Bad differentiation only exists in the minds of their creators. Afghanistan may continue to suffer from their attacks but people have decided to oppose them. What will happen to Pakistan because with a greater number of sympathizers, it is ready to buckle under. The acrimonious exchanges between Karzai and Pakistan reflects that Afghanistan wants to tread a different moderate path now but Pakistan remains wedded to strategic depth, non State actors and the use of proxies while continuing to blame all and sundry external ghosts.
NATO/US sent their troops to clear the mess created but instead of Thanks they received brickbats. When they leave in 2014 what will Pakistan do ? Still try to control Afghanistan through proxies, while Pakistan is being burnt to the ground ? Think and ponder because the current course looks not just suicidal, but demented too.
@BlackJack: Your comment is as thought provoking as the article if not more.
@Author: So you say you do not want to distinguish between good Taliban and bad Taliban. Good to know. You are one step further from your fellow OpEd writers NAdir Hassan and Feisal Naqvi.SO let me ask you the folow-up questions. What are your views on LeJ? What about LeT and JeM? Do you support a good terrorist bad terrorist concept? What are your views on anti Ahmadi laws in Pakistani constitution? What are your views on the changes to the blasphemy laws introduced by Zia which are used to as a tool of oppression? What are your views on Pakistani Hindus fleeing to India because their daughters are being kidnapped, raped and forcibly converted? What do you think of the target killing of Hazaras?
You might think I am bringing up a laundry list of unrelated issues for Pakistan bashing. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is the institutionalized hatred and intolerance for the 'other' with increasingly broader definition of what constitutes the other that has led Pakistan to this state. Unless the basic root cause is addressed - an operation in Waziristan will not solve the problem. Gen Kayani has been unable to do anything after his 14th August speech saying that the existential threats are internal not external because the army too has radicalized people and he does not want to risk full fledged revolt.
Think about it.
Its not Pakistan's war since war is when two sides fight. Pakistan seems to have surrendered without even fighting.
The real question is how did we end up here and then how do we get out of it. Our establishment including Military were pursuing a wrong policy of interference in one neighboring country and carrying obsession with another, while the elected governments including the one You proudly represented in the 1990's happily neglected our problems and until now all of politicians & generals are busy in self serving while the country burns, civilians & young law enforcement agencies officers are getting killed on daily basis (SP Peshawar being a fresh example from yesterday). Many people are talking about these issues and there is a, current affair circus on dozen of channels so how does your article make you any different and What is the purpose of writing it here since you can choose to express your views to the high ups where it matters the most?. We really need to start from educating people to chose such politicians who work for the future of this society and parties who's manifesto at least include some of the following if not all, 1) Population growth control 2) Closing, fencing & guarding of Western border 3) Expulsion of all refugees without any lame excuses. 4) Make smaller provinces in Punjab & Balochistan for better governance, Not based on lingual or ethnic basis. 5) Single curriculum for all educational institutes with updated materials and methods 6) Work power generation and at least updating annually about the progress till its sorted out 7) Pass Anti-state laws so that criminals cannot escape justice due to lack of proof 8) Install surveillance system on major highways and important areas like the one in London. If we really want to sort of the current mess, 1) We must get rid of those hypocritical leaders who play both sides. 2) Then close the Western border and guard it wherever possible 3) Expel all refugees immediately and only allow traveler with student & business visas. 4) Finally Cleanse those areas from foreigners & locals who are anti state elements.
You said "The civil and military establishment, political parties, religious groups and all sections of society have to convincingly announce once and for all that Pakistan was not created for the Taliban" This is the imp point where no rightwing party agrees with the secular elected coalition govt. On the contrary they leave no stone unturned to get rid of the govt brick by brick. In this exercise these forces join hands with generals and SC judges and use fanatic terrorists as a tool against modernity, democracy and women and children.
There is mentioning of killing of thousands of sodiers by terrorists who have become only more powerful. How many generals are sacked or court marshalled for losing eight thousand soldiers without wining a war.Is there any govt. who dare to ask why and how these soldiers were killed. The big question to the generals is- which one is our asset Taliban or a soldier.
Taliban want to 'Imranize' Pakistan through terrorism!
No drastic change is gong to take place in Pakistan in the current politico social scenario.
The right question to ask is not "if taliban will stop their attacks if Drone attacks stop, or if US withdraws".
It is "Would Taliban change their ideology, if US withdrew". Would they not enforce their regressive dark age on areas they are in control (Afghanistan or Pakistan).
If they would - then IK and any other folks speaking up about peace deal with Taliban are fooling themselves. Buying peace by offering Afghanistan to these barbarians is as reprehensible as buying peace for fear of Taliban.
*Would you tell me please, which way I ought to go from here?
That depends a good deal on where you want to get to said the cat.
I don't much care where, said Alice.
Then it doesn't matter which way you go, said the cat.*
For a nation that is now constantly searching for turning points on a journey heading nowhere, possibly instructive reading.
