What I have against many talk shows is that the moderator often behaves as if the viewers were composed of a bunch of yokels that live in those never-never happy valleys where goats are surrounded by smiling, monosyllabic peasants who knit those appalling jerseys. Why don’t these talk show hosts ask questions that are pertinent, relevant and germane to conditions in the country instead of waffling about irrelevant drivel? They should ask questions which strike at the very heart and soul of this land. Questions like: why doesn’t the head of state or the prime minister try to cleanse the country of illegally acquired weapons by asking the army chief to use the three arms of the military, the Rangers and the police to unleash a rigorous door-to-door campaign of confiscating weapons from people who don’t possess genuine licences? This would curb street crime and targeted killing to some extent by removing hit men from the various political parties. But it has to be done with the wholehearted support and commitment of the men in uniform.
Who the hell cares if Seraiki speakers are denied their own province or if the government continues to stall and defy the Supreme Court? These are non-issues. Unfortunately, nobody appears to be interested in the real problems that plague the land, like removing illegally obtained weapons, establishing the rule of law, giving the severest punishment to wife beaters and rapists, treating karo kari as a crime under Section 300 of the Pakistan Penal Code and not glorifying it as an act of honour killing. And there is, of course, the issue that the Muslim clergy doesn’t want to hear about — tackling the population explosion. In Pakistan, when a man viciously beats his wife, probably maiming her in the bargain, she invariably takes it submissively, especially if she comes from a poor, defenceless background and has nobody to turn to. In the US, Britain, Germany and other parts of Europe, when a man sadistically beats his wife and the incident is reported to the police, the man is arrested, tried and imprisoned for 10 years. And we are supposed to be an Islamic republic. Need I say more?

Sir, your intention is honest and the only choice we have to move forward, but its impossible in present circumstances. One original license has hundreds and in some districts, thousands of fake copies. Its extemely hard to verify and authenticate these licenses. Also, there is no surety that verifying authority will do its job honestly. The only process we can adopt is to first cancel all kinds of licenses. Give some time to surrender all legal and illegal weapons with state authorites and then move forward to search illegal weapons. There should be no distinction between any organization, group, community, area and status. All kinds of private weapon manufacturing and retailing should be brought under strict state control. Committing this task half heartedly will ruin the situation further into disaster.
anwar mooraj is absolutely right but who in this governm. has the guts to implement this noble idea?
@numbersnumbers: My apologies for wrong information. Thanks for correcting my mistake.
Just a childish and utopian article. Outlaws will always have guns no matter what you do. All you will be doing is just disarming the innocent!
@It Is (still) Economy Stupid: The phone number is 911, not 9/11!
How about turning the weapons factories in Pak Af border area into a legal export oriented industry and make some money from their craft?
Remember guns do not kill people it is people who kill people. If you take away guns they will use knife, cricket bat or fist. So problem is with people not the guns. In some countries a 9/11 call for domestic violence is top priority and police will show up in a heart beat. Once police arrives the charges of domestic violence can not be withdrawn by a spouse(usually wife). This is to prevent the pressure on wife once the man has come to his senses. Only a judge after hearing can make a determination and the tape of 9/11 is part of the evidence.
But in a culture where multiple wives are norm, the victim of domestic violence is dispensable in a heart beat as her replacement is ready, willing and waiting in the wings.
Media is a puppet of deep state and is doing it's evil job way it is required.Pemra is not under civilion control therefore no panik among media bosses.(lutto te phutto).
You Sir are obviously angry and rightly so. The problem is clearly staring us in the face but the solution seems non-existant. The politicians do not have the will nor the brain to fix it. The judiciary's role is a limited one and by design has to rely on the other pillars of the state to be truely effective. That leaves the armed forces and on this I'd like to repeat what my little 8 years old answered the other day to a random suggestion ' O ! pleaseee. ' Brings to mind ' Up the creek without a paddle '.
