MULTAN: The Punjab government has decided to put a security ribbon in its college and university certificates in order to curb fake degrees.

The government also decided to print a bar code on all certificates. Education officials have also sought recommendations from teachers in this regard. The government also decided that the answer sheets provided to the candidates during exams in 2010 will each carry a unique bar code. The government has taken this decision after several lawmakers and government officials were exposed for holding fake degrees.

According to the Education Department’s the security ribbon and a printable bar code on the certificates and answer sheets will allow the degrees to be easily traceable with the help of laser technology. Government officials say that the provincial administration has decided to implement the move immediately and has also taken suggestions from educationists in this regard. Controller of examinations Professor Muhammad Akbar told The Express Tribune that he had issued recommendations to the government in this regard. He hoped that fake degree incidents could be curbed after the implementation of this project. “We are putting in place serious steps so that those holding office are accountable to the public. There will be no more fake degrees as every degree will be traceable,” he said.
