KARACHI:

The parties opposing the local government ordinance have not yet decided whether they will sit on the opposition benches.

“With the suggestions from coalition partners, the ordinance can be amended,” said Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Khuhro, on Monday. He added that those who were criticising the ordinance by saying that it was issued in the middle of the night, were supporters of the ‘Pervez Musharraf system’.

“The ordinance was issued by the governor because the Sindh Assembly was not in session and it will be presented in the assembly within the next three months.” Responding to questions about the president’s visit to National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza’s house, Khuhro said that Zardari wanted to inquire about her health and that it was premature to comment on whether any responsibility had been given to former Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza. Parties such as the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, National Peoples Party and Awami National Party had announced earlier that they would break their alliances with the current government if the ordinance was promulgated.
