KARACHI: A strike called by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is underway followed by the murder of its party leader and former Liaquatabad Town nazim, Express News reported Wednesday.

Former Liaquatabad Town Nazim Dr Pervez Mehmood was shot dead along with a friend late on Monday night near the KDA Chowrangi in Nazimabad.

Aerial firing left the situation tense in some parts of Karachi.

Unknown men threw a hand grenade in PIB Colony which injured three people.

Two buses and two trucks were set ablaze in Orangi Town and Quaidabad.

Angered protesters burnt tyres on the National Highway and put obstacles on the road which made it difficult for the traffic to pass. However, later, the police cleared the road.

Traffic on the roads remained thin and so did the public transport due to which people going to their offices faced difficulties.

Unknown men opened fire in Safoora Goth and Gulistan-e-Jauhar and forced the shopkeepers to close down their shops.

After the deadly love-hate relationship between PPP-MQM-ANP which has destroyed the peace of Karachi, it's great to see an alternate being developed for the Karachiites in the form of the Jamaat e Islami! JI does not even command enough control to be able to forcefully shut down businesses (as done by MQM, PPP and ANP in their ethnic strongholds) because of the fact that JI does not have a Pathan or Muhajir or Sindhi/Baloch majority area to support them. Still the way their strike has been supported by the masses shows a lot about the changing political landscape of Karachi! Beware the brutal lords of Karachi... Next elections won't be as easy!
