Nawaz Sharif, the eponymous chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, said on Tuesday that President Asif Ali Zardari has some covert plans behind his statement of holding local body elections.
Talking to the media after his speech at an Information Technology event hosted by the Netsol Technologies, Nawaz tried to shake off the tag of friendly opposition which is popular in some circles about his party.
Nawaz said that the opinion in Sindh was divided over the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2012 and a majority of people were against it.
He said that President Zardari had made a calculated statement about holding local body elections. “Zardari deliberately issued the feeler of local government (LG) election,” he said.
When asked if the Punjab government would hold LG elections, he said this was Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s business, not his. Six months are left before the general elections, but Zardari is talking about LG polls, he remarked.
About caretaker set-up, he said that under the 20th Constitutional Amendment leader of opposition and leader of the house, after their mutual consultation, will announce a caretaker prime minister and if they fail, the Election Commission of Pakistan will decide about it.
In his speech at Nestol event Nawaz said that PML-N in its first tenure laid the foundation of strong and vibrant IT and telecom sector in Pakistan.
“We had put in place policies that were to transform Pakistan into a leader in the field of ICT. We deregulated the telecom sector, paving the way for a cellular revolution in the country. Today, as a result of those policies, we have over 110 million mobile phone users in the country,” he said.
The Punjab government has launched Arfa Software Technology Park, established almost 4,300 IT labs in all high schools across Punjab to foster IT skills, which is one of the biggest initiatives to bridge the digital divide, distributed 0.12 million laptops amongst students and is now launching the second phase of this initiative in which another 100,000 laptops will be given to students.
Punjab IT Board has launched several e-government initiatives. Land records are being computerised speedily, which will bring a paradigm shift in revenue record management. All of these initiatives will strengthen the foundation of the ICT sector in Punjab and revolutionise governance, Nawaz said.

With due respect sir, your time is over. I know you would have been a competent PM if elected for the third term but unfortunately, this is not going to happen as people have developed a craze for Imran khan. His propaganda skills are fabulous. He is a hard working person. He has the support of establishment. He will only disturb your vote bank and PPP would not be a big target of his campaign. He has some special rivalry with you. He can tolerate zardari's corruption, and Altaf's butchery but not your popularity in Punjab. Allah bless all of you.
