ISLAMABAD: The much awaited summary for the expansion of the Federal Services Hospital, also known as Polyclinic, has finally been approved by Prime Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani.

The four storey block is a two year project, which will house 550 beds and  contain neurosurgery and pediatric surgery wards, along with an oncology block, according to spokesperson Polyclinic Dr Sharif Astori.

Construction work is expected to begin after PC-1 is approved by the Executive Committee of National Economic Council.

Lack of public health care facilities for the residents of twin cities had led to increased burden on the two hospitals of the capital: Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and Polyclinic (FSH).

An FSH official acknowledged that patients felt inconvenienced due to the lack of space. “It gets really difficult to manage people in times of an emergency,” he said.

He added that the staff of the hospital was not satisfied with the facilities and space in comparison to the daily influx of the patients. “The block would be a timely addition.”

The new block will be built adjacent to the hospital on the land which currently falls under Argentina Park. A meeting will soon be held with the Capital Development Authority for land acquisition.
