NEW YORK: Aisamul Haq Qureshi and Su-Wei Hesieh were sent packing from the mixed doubles event of the US Open after a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic and Marcin Matkowski of Poland in their opening  match of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Kim Clijsters said goodbye to her singles career after a 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/5) loss to British teen Laura Robson in the second round at the same Arthur Ashe Stadium where she won three titles.

“It has been an incredible journey and a lot of dreams for me have come true because of tennis,” said Klijsters. “For me to have been able to have been a part of women’s tennis, and on top of women’s tennis for so many years, it has been a crazy rollercoaster.”

Murray backs giant-killer Robson for top

Meanwhile, Britain’s Andy Murray backed compatriot Robson to reach the top of the sport after the teenager’s stunning victory over Clijsters.

“She moved very well today,” said Murray. “I think if she keeps improving on her movement, she’s going to be a very good player. She’ll get to the top soon.”

Murray secured his place in the third round with a comfortable 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 win over Ivan Dodig of Croatia.

Sharapova sets up university challenge

In other matches, third-seed Maria Sharapova cruised into the third round with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of hapless Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino. The 2006 champion next faces American college player Mallory Burdette, the world number 252 who studies psychology at Stanford and is making her Grand Slam debut.

“It’s a big stage for her,” said Sharapova. “She will have the home support behind her. She will be a difficult opponent.”

Elsewhere, China’s Li Na beat Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-4, 6-4 while Petra Kvitova overpowered Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-3. Samantha Stosur also progressed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Edina Gallovits-Hall.

In men’s singles matches, Lleyton Hewitt beat Tobias Kamke 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4, David Ferrer overcame Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) and Juan Martin del Potro defeated Florent Serra 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.
