ISLAMABAD:

The process to auction third-generation (3G) mobile telecom licences is expected to be completed by December this year, and contribute around Rs300 billion to the national exchequer.

The direct spectrum auction is expected to bring in more than Rs100 billion, while infrastructure development can fetch about Rs200 billion.

The new chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Farooq Awan, has said he is quite optimistic about the early introduction of 3G or 4G technology. Giving a briefing to the IT and Telecom Reporters’ Association, Awan said the auction would be open to the five existing mobile operators, as well as potential new entrants and assured the right of usage will be auctioned according to a laid down procedure.
