Pakistan, set a tough victory target of 510, were bowled out for 300 in their second innings just before stumps on the fourth day at the Galle International Stadium.
Off-spinner Suraj Randiv, who claimed four wickets in the first innings, took three more in the second to fashion Sri Lanka's emphatic win.
Pakistan's innings revolved around a 151-run stand for the fifth wicket between Younis Khan (87) and Asad Shafiq (80), before both fell on either side of the tea interval.
The second Test starts at the Sinhalese sports club in Colombo on June 30.
Brief scores:
Sri Lanka 472 and 137-5 declared; Pakistan 100 and 300.

I am waiting for people to make democracy and elected secular govt responsible for the defeat of our team. The team which played better won, it is that simple. Pakistani bowling which is their strength conceded too many runs and Pakistan is never famous to chase a huge target anyway. We should take the games as "game" and not a national honor question. There are no great young batsmen on the horizon except Asad Shafiq and Azhar. Till the time more good players are found let us depend upon Misbah and perhaps bring in M. Yusuf.
@Sehr.Siddiqui:
Some people cannot get meaning of sports competitions .. They are meant to provide entertainment and are to be taken as examination where one has to pass .. Both teams are paid to play to the fullest of their capabilities whether they lose or win. Congratulations to Sri Lanka, Pakistani team must put their acts together and fight back as a team not some bunch of unprofessional street kids.
SL played better and won....it as simple. congrats to them and best of luck to Pak team for next matches. As for umpiring, it was horrible but at the end of the day only win or loss is recorded. everything else is forgotten
Congrats Sri Lanka on this victory! It must mean a lot to the Nation. For Pakistan, it is a worrisome moment. This win will hugely lift up Srilankan confidence against Pakistan and subsequent matches will be more difficult for Pakistan. Let us see what happens next !
Must be IPL's evil impact on Test Cricket... Oh wait.....
Always remember this basic rule
Pakistan's victory is inversely proportional to people's hope. When you have high hopes, team would lose and when zero expectations, team would bring trophies. We had some hopes this time, so the result is infront of you
The umpiring was rubbish to say the least, there were more the 10 decisions that went against Pakistan. That's not to say that we were the better team, the Sri Lankans were better in all three areas of play, they have world class players who are in form.
This indeed was an eye opener for those who criticized and hooted "Tuk Tuk Misbah". See u need tuk tuk at this level as well as the personality who can keep the team united and thats exactly what Misbah has been doing since 2010. Also comes to surface the fact that if you try and elevate a mediocre like Hafeez too much this is the result you get. Hafeez perhaps has always been a more effective bowler than a batsman, it was indeed his good luck that during the years that he has been playing for Pakistan there really has'nt been a serious challenger to his slot. On top of that the media has further spoilt his head by persistently calling him "Professor". I am sorry if I seem over critical on Hafeez but this is what he deserves as he was wrested with a National responsibility of leading the team in One Match in Misbah's absence and he was perhaps too busy in his captaincy eroma that he even forgot to bat, or shall I say he has been badly exposed as a batsman because one can easily see the difference between a mediocre like him and a world class Younis Khan who is equipped to handle and resist any situation.
We lost because of disgusting umpiring.
The rest of the comments are rubbish.
So the Poor run continues, still two more tests to follow so hopes are high and we can come back and win this series.
If cricket is by chance, why we have been giving so much money when they win? When they loose they should be penalized.
