World Nursing Day: ‘Nurses’ role was highlighted during dengue epidemic’

LGH principal asks govt to grant posthumous civil award to nurse who died on job.

“Nurses are the backbone of the medical profession and a ray of hope for the ailing humanity,” Dr Tariq Salahuddin, the Lahore General Hospital and Postgraduate Medical Institute principal, said on Friday.


He was addressing a ceremony organised at the LGH Nursing School to mark the World Nursing Day.

In his address, the principal said that a modern health system without the contribution of nurses could not be imagined. He their importance had been highlighted during the dengue epidemic.

Prof Salahuddin said that the World Nursing Day was observed to honour nurses’ contributions.

He announced an Isma Kanwal Award for outstanding nurses, named after a nurse who died from the dengue fever contracted while working in the dengue ward in 2011. He also appealed to the federal government to confer a posthumous civil award to honour her.

He said a nursing college would also be set up at the Lahore General Hospital and nurses will also be given computer education. He said nurses would also be sent abroad for training. Nursing Federation General Secretary Nisab Akhter demanded that nurses be consulted in the drafting of health policy.

Punjab Nursing Director General Munawwar Sultana praised the government’s efforts for the nursing community. She said vacant seats had been filled and promotion cases finalised on the chief minister’s directions.

Later, Prof Salahuddin also distributed cash prizes and appreciation certificates among top students. Towards the end of the event, nursing students performed a tableau on the efforts of nurses.

Services Hospital Chief Nursing Superintendent Augustina Rae, Allama Iqbal Medical College Nursing College Principal Kausar Perveen, Mayo Hospital Nursing School Principal Rukhsana Kamal, Punjab Institute of Cardiology Nursing Superintendent Samina Yasmin and Young Nursing Association leader Tauseef Khanam were also present.
