Assistant Sub-Inspector Rana Ashfaq said that the couple, on a motorcycle, was told to pull over “because they looked suspicious”. Ashfaq said that when they were taken to the police station, they told him that they were in love and had eloped. Their families, they said, though related did not wish for them to get married. Ashfaq said that the police then contacted their families in Gujranwala who reached Hafizabad in the afternoon. According to the official, parents of both the girl and the man asked them to return home. However, the young couple remained adamant that they wanted to get married before they left the police station. The parents finally acquiesced and a maulvi was called to solemnise the nikah.
