OGDC chief: Three candidates in the running for position

Summary sent to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani

ISLAMABAD: The petroleum ministry has shortlisted three candidates for the vacant managing director position in Oil and Gas Development Company and forwarded a summary to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

Riaz Khan was the first to be shortlisted after applying for the position when the company announced the opening in newspapers; however, the process stalled as the ministry looked for pooling more candidates before making the final decision.

Head hunter had given nominations of the other two Mahmood Sadiqui and Shehbaz Khan who were then interviewed by Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain.

Shehbaz Khan has previously worked at MOL Pakistan, operator of an oil and gas field, whereas Mahmood Sadiqui has worked in some smaller oil and gas exploration companies.

Some government officials believe the selection of candidates through a head hunter was a dubious way to find a potential leader for the country’s largest oil and gas explorer.

They further said that head hunter Sidat Hyder Morshed Associates Private Limited was hired without any selection process. The petroleum ministry is required to advertise and then select a head hunter.

Sidat Hyder Morshed is currently working with OGDC for a salary compensation survey.

Petroleum Minister Dr Asim Hussain told The Express Tribune that head hunter was hired by OGDC and could be given any assignment.

“The head hunter was selected through an advertisement and therefore it was not required to advertise for the post of head of OGDC,” Hussain said and added that a summary of a panel of candidates was moved to prime minister following merit and rules and regulations.

Minister for Petroleum Dr Asim Hussain sacked all managing directors of public sector oil and gas companies after being appointed the adviser to prime minister on petroleum and natural resources in a bid to revive the cash-starved energy sector.
