Desalination drive: Land to be reclaimed in Rahimyar Khan

Pakistan has 32 million hectares of land available for cultivation, but only half of this total is regularly irrigated

MULTAN: A three-year project has been launched to make saline land cultivable in Rahimyar Khan for enhanced production from the agricultural district. The project will be executed by the agriculture department of Punjab and the Soil Salinity Research Station, according to a press release. Lack of an irrigation infrastructure and salinity are the main hurdles in the growth of the agriculture sector. Pakistan has 32 million hectares of land available for cultivation, but only half of this total is regularly irrigated. Around 6.8 million hectares land in the country are salinated, including 1.5 million acre in districts Bahawalnagar, Rahimyar Khan, Bahawalpur, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Khanewal, Multan, Vehari and Lodhran in southern Punjab.
