KARACHI: The authorities have registered cases against unidentified suspects for killing the former president of the Malir Bar Association, his son and a policeman who used to work for the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) leader Afaq Ahmed’s security squad.

So far, no breakthroughs were reported in any case.

On Saturday, Advocate Salahuddin and his son Ali Raza were gunned down by two men on a motorcycle on their way to work. This incident sparked panic among the Shia community and areas, including Malir, Rafa-e-Aam Society, Rizvia, Ancholi and Abbas Town. A heavy contingent of law enforcement agents was sent to maintain the law and order situation. The advocate and his son were buried at the Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard later that night.

The Malir City police registered FIR no. 47/12 under sections 302/34 and 7 of the Anti- Terrorism Act of 1997 on behalf of Salahuddin’s son Syed Kazim Raza. An inquiry team led by DIG Mushtaq Maher, CIA DIG Manzur Mughal, SSP Niaz Khosa and SSP Farooq Awan was formed to investigate the murders on orders from Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wassan.

According to SSP Khosa, Salahuddin and his son had never dealt with high profile cases and did not have any personal enmities. He added that they were most probably killed over sectarian basis.

While talking to The Express Tribune, SSP Khosa said that this year target killings had started off with Advocate Maqboolur Rehman on January 11 near Islamia College. He said that the advocate was from the Ahle Sunnat wal Jammat, formerly known as the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan. “We have no clue about who did it but there is no doubt that Advocate Salahuddin and his son were killed over sectarian basis,” he said. “This case and many others are directly linked to Maqboolur Rehman’s case.”

A policeman and MQM-H activist identified as Munawar were also killed in the attack.
