Gotcha: In surprise visit, CM finds bureaucrats... missing

KARACHI:

The Sindh Secretariat building admitted an unusual visitor Monday morning at 9:15 am, to be exact.

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah had decided to pay a surprise visit to Tughlaq House to check on whether the province’s bureaucrats and other government officials cared at all for punctuality. Shah was accompanied by his political coordinator, Siddique Abu Bhai.

However, it seemed that the chief minister was in for a surprise. Almost all provincial heads, secretaries, special secretaries, additional secretaries, deputy secretaries and section officers were absent as the minister took a round of the place. Only a few lower grade staff members were present. Shah was astonished to find that many rooms in the building were either locked or were occupied by naib qasids, chowkidars and clerks.

Clearly annoyed by the attitude of the public servants, the chief minister directed the chief secretary to take the latecomers to task and to ensure that the secretariat staff came to work on time. Shah recognised the difficulty that people had to face in getting their work done.
