LAS VEGAS: Last week, someone burned down a Muslim funeral home/mosque under construction here in Las Vegas. The authorities and government machinery went into motion to investigate. No lives were lost. No one was hurt. We were allowed to protest. The press and media covered it. Everyone knows of an undercurrent of discrimination, but rarely does it raise its ugly face in public. Unfortunately, the situation in Pakistan is exactly the opposite — minorities are persecuted regularly and people take it in their stride. The incidents mentioned here are harrowing — the kind of experiences we read about in historical accounts of persecution by other ‘uncivilised’ nations and peoples. It seems like we have become the oppressors and don’t possess the insight to see where we are heading.
