However, he refused twice to talk in detail about reports that ISI chief Ahmed Shuja Pasha may be getting an extension in service. He was scheduled to retire in March 2010, but was twice given extensions.
Nawaz was speaking after announcing that Lahore’s busy Model Town Link Road will be renamed after Colonel Sheraz Shaheed, who died in South Waziristan.
However, while he lauded the Pakistan Army’s services, he criticised those armymen who had ruled the country, saying that when generals participate in politics it destroys the country and the nation has to suffer from their unconstitutional steps.
New provinces
Speaking a day after the premier reiterated his government’s support for a Seraiki province, Nawaz also cautioned the government, saying it must decide ‘responsibly’ on an issue that has long-term bearing on the country.
“Decisions like these which are due to affect the country’s future must only be announced after thorough consultation on the matter,” Nawaz Sharif told reporters on Monday. “It is not appropriate to make such announcements at isolated press conferences.”
“The Cabinet should meet on it and all political parties must arrive at a consensus which is in the greater interest of the country,” he said.
PML-N had earlier proposed that a commission should be established to deliberate on the matter and had even blocked coalition partner Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s move to pass a bill on South Punjab in the National Assembly. The party also worked against including the matter in the recently passed 20th amendment.
He also dispelled the impression that there is any infighting in the PML-N, in response to a question about a recent statement by Zulfiqar Khan Khosa.
Continuing to criticise the incumbent government, Nawaz said that they were disappointed in the government as it had backtracked on its commitments. “If they had stayed steady, we would have continued to work in tandem with them.” They make weak decisions and then withdraw them, Nawaz said.
The way out of the current crises, he said, is an honest and competent leadership that respects Pakistan’s sovereignty and has a good track record. “Such a leadership can successfully steer Pakistan towards development,” he said.
When asked about his party’s policy on military operations with particular reference to former president Pervez Musharraf’s decision on South Waziristan, Nawaz said that when he was in power, there was no terrorism and no suicide attacks. “All such elements, we brought them to the negotiation table,” he said. “We were the government that amicably resolved the situation when Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan.”
He said that if, at the time of the fateful 9/11 attacks, Pakistan had had a democratic government, Musharraf-style ‘one man show’ decisions would not have been made. “Terrorism and extremism wouldn’t have been able to root themselves in Pakistan if civilian governments were not overthrown and power usurped by generals.”
He also criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf but without taking its name. “Those who chanted slogans of change, their voices are fading away. PML-N will bring the new era of change.”
Party elections
Earlier, speaking at the party’s provincial elections in Lahore, Nawaz said that if his government had not been toppled by Musharraf, Pakistan would have been among the developed countries. “I put the country among the seven atomic powers of the world and constructed the motorway when none of our neighbouring countries had it.”
He said that Musharraf had introduced the culture of political hypocrisy and dishonesty as well as opportunism.

@lpc: Thats why he and his party has no support in these provinces.
When generals usurp power, politicians like Nawaz Sharif emerge.
"When generals usurp power, it only pushes Pakistan into turmoil: Nawaz "
However, we have seen otherwise!
Turmoil exists today. Under Generals there is less turmoil. Parties do not know how to behave. Have been in power several times, so one cannot say it is because they are new to the game. They give democracy a bad name;but, keep on pointing fingers at Generals.
While in power he kept insisting that Musharraf should do something about Siachin, his words 'itni bari army rakhi hoi hai kuch karkay dikhain' and when he pushed it NS backed off under US pressure making Musharraf looking like the bad guy, and that is when things started going south between the two of them, and now he has the audacity to speak against him. A politician chickened out (as usual) while the general was trying to follow orders.
Shame on u people for insulting the army men, its a pity than pride that we still serving on border for a nation of cowards and who has no heart left.
@Zafar: The day their name in a title doesn't attract audiences and readers is the day that will happen. The media could make them disappear quicker than ISI.
For a change Mian Sharif is correct, when Generals like Zia usurp power, the country gets into turmoil in the shape of Sharif's coming into power.
Mian Sahab.. General TP and General Zia?
Mian Sahab, why did you say "Lahore Lahore hai but Karachi us ka shohar hai!!" please esplain!
.....and when politicians come into power they shamelessly mismanage to such an extent that the generals feel they have no option but to intervene. To stop this all you have to do is provide reasonable responsible governance and in that you fail every time. It's not hard to guess who's at fault.
@S. A. Bukhara
Bro...we know what sharif bros thought about role of the judicary. http://tribune.com.pk/story/172523/wikileaks-shahbaz-was-in-negotiation-to-remove-cj/
Please....open your eyes.
Look who is talking - a production of army himself, just shows how ungrateful this man is - jis thali men khaya usi men chaid kiya. Army gave you the mills back, army made you the first finance minister in punjab, mentored by Ghulam Jillani Khan himslef when he was the governor of punjab. Tum ko sharam ani chahiyai.
Just as true is WHEN POLITICIANS USURP POWER IT PUSHES PAKISTAN INTO CHAOS.
Politicians have doen it too. Why blame only the army.
@S.A. Bukhara You have some valid points but i think it is a matter of trust. Personally i cant trust them. He has been in power 5 times and he has made mistakes again and again. What guarantee is there he wont make mistakes again...
Please give this man some credit. And please don't fault people for their history, especially if it seems they have learnt a lesson from the past. I am beginning to have more and more respect for NS. His positions over the past 3 years have been principled. He has supported the anti-militancy consensus, stressed on the role of the judiciary, avoided resorting to the old oppostion politics of "bring down the govt. at any cost," has been a voice of reason and wisdom on Balochistan, and spot on when it comes to the role of military in Pakistan. While I agree to some degree with those who say he "may" change colors once he is in power, I also believe there is no better leader in the country than him today. Leaders like him are critical for the democratic process to develop properly.
how can he even talk about generals when he had openly supported zia ul haq. He was part of IJI was made by agencies and then he appointed musharraf as army general. He has been heavily responsible for the mess in the country
Mr nawaz sharif conveniently forgets that he was the one who made musharaf COAS out of turn. The senior general at that time was gen ali quli khan but because of ch nisar and his brother's pressure who were freinds of musharaf he made musharaf COAS
NS itself product of Army have remained on the same page army/isi in memogate scandal and in parliament, the PML-N's ch nisar spoke in parliament for its great role.
Look who is talking, he is product of general zia ul haq, and he was the one to support him.
There is unbridgeable distance in between politics and business.
Zia executed a democratically elected prime minister, but you raised no objection,no single word you spoke as a protest.
Musharraf toppled people's government you have put the sky on head and wanted to make that army action a part of the history of Pakistan.
There is great difference in view,WHY.
Mr. Nawaz Sharif you yourself are a product of a General's lust for power. Had it not been for General Zia, you would not have been a politician but perhaps a businessman selling steel in some fashion.
Has completed his service, would like to say herein,he has completed his service with extension he deserve no more, let him go to home.
many are standing behind him, waiting their turn, let them move ahead, they have right as you had.
Institution, persons can be blackmailed but not the nation.
@AK47: and yet he is demanding an apology from Ch shujaat over the support for dictator
Army, judiciary, Executive, Press, People, are are member of one family.
We can not live without each other. so love is essential that is indispensable for progress. come closer and embrace bot embarrass,
Gilani should think a million times before making any statemnt to break a federating unit of Pakistan.
If he wasnt to play petty provincial and language politics he should cease to be PM.
We all know how Nawaz Sharif entered politics ?
National Reconciliation Ordinance was a first explosion, in defense, water of immunity was taken from the ocean of constitution poured on it,Now fire is under control but heavy smoke still rising to the sky.
Memogate appeared and the very short time covered the whole sky ,It was expected coming a horrific disaster which swallowed the whole nation but black faced enemy failed and save Pakistan from the crisis because it is a fort of Islam not conspiracies
I wonder if some day age restriction is applied to politicians as well. Why don't they retire after "serving" the country? Begum Naseem Wali is again in politics even though she is quite old. It is a proven fact that whenever the country is in deep trouble or any new crisis arises, this very own Shair flees the country.
There is constitutional and legal procedure and other departmental proceeding regarding the extension in service, dismissal from job,and other relating proceedings through which the person involved can be degrade and upgrade.
Extension in service based on politically illegal gratification is not justified ,It is illegal and unacceptable to all specially civilized societies of the day.
In case, Mian Sahip is true in his stance , he is right side and his demand must be acceptable.
Be explained the point, where from stability would come, all the parties are combating each others, baseless allegation are being leveled, and being charge sheeted opponents.
It is right,Musharraf was dictator,he toppled a democratically elected government and put the elected prime minister in jail where he was mentally tortured fundamental principle of democracy was openly violated no one raised the vice against that horrific act.
But the other hand, pages of the history tell us that a first elected elected prime after coup tried to convince them on some unacceptable principle and on the denial imposed fabricated murder charges and executed.
It is essential for security of country, and stability of democracy, the partis operating in the field now a days undertake policy of reconciliation and put the country on the right track,. not create tension on the matter like memogate.
Gone were the day, when a army chief took a rod of honor and toppled the elected regime who had support of millions of people..
Bright future of democracy in Pakistan, as every one seeing and feeling.
Pasha should not get another term at any cost
Good that PML-N is being proactive and making it a valid point before it is too late.
honest and competent leader !!! at least you (NS) do not fulfil your own criteria....
talk about consensus .. when pml n was in power in 1997 that had all punjabis in their cabinet only 2 from kpk there was no representation from sindh and balochistan.
