Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle smashed an unbeaten 101 off just 44 to lead Barisal Burners’ 10-wicket thrashing of the Sylhet Royals in the Bangladesh Premier League.

Gayle’s innings consisted of seven fours and 10 sixes as he shared a 167-run opening stand with Pakistan-discard Ahmed Shahzad, who scored a 35-ball 56. Sylhet Royals, who were put into bat, put on a decent 165 for four off their quota. But even they would not have imagined the Burners to overhaul that in the 14th over as none of the eight bowlers tried by Sylhet failed to halt the riot.

Shehzad hit nine fours and a six, playing second fiddle to Gayle as Barisal launched their league campaign in style.

Earlier, Peter Trego and Alok Kapali hit half-centuries in a 105-run third-wicket stand to take their side past the 150-mark. Yasir Arafat was the most successful bowler for Barisal, finishing with two for 33 off his quota.

Kings upstage Rajshahi

Meanwhile, in the second match of the opening day, Dwayne Bravo’s all-round effort lifted the Chitagong Kings to an easy 53-run win over Duronto Rajshahi.

Bravo smashed a 19-ball 38 to take his side past the 200-mark and returned with figures of three for 17, while opening the bowling, as Duronto could only muster 153 in reply, being dismissed off the penultimate ball of the innings.

Nasir Jamshed hit a 38-ball 56 to lay the foundations of a mammoth Chittagong score before Enamul Haque and Muttiah Muralitharan supported Bravo with the ball to get maximum points for their side.
