In a move long overdue, the government finally submitted a formal nomination for renowned social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi to the 2012 Nobel committee.
According to a press release, the government took the step on the directives of the prime minister.
The nomination is in partnership with ‘Edhi for Nobel Peace Prize’ – a campaign launched by SOC Films and Peter Oborne, the chief political commentator of the Daily Telegraph.
The initiative includes an online petition and a letter writing campaign aimed at galvanizing support and awareness for Edhi’s nomination.
To date, over 75,000 signatures have been amassed and hundreds of letters sent to individuals who are in a position to submit nominations to the Nobel Committee.
Edhi, 83, is a household name in Pakistan, known for his humanitarianism and charity work.

Kudos to Abdul Sattar Edhi.
respected Edhi and his work is Beyond any Award! though it is great effort of Telegraph to make his philanthropist work recognized worldly! Truly AMAZING HUMAN BEING!
Jiyaee Bhutto. People's govt makes decisions according to people thinking.
Fully support this nomination, Hope he gets it.
He deserves Noble prize more than anyone else at the moment...
I think first right person nomination during current regime
Long overdue. Thank god they got around to trying while he is still with us.
Noble Prize Committee does not consider any more Pakistanis to get the Noble Prize.
Pakistanis are born to pay the price and not to get the prize.
et should have given the url for the online petition so that more Pakistanis could add their signatures.
pleased to see that,,,hopefully Mr. edhi will get the Nobel Peace prize too.....
at least govt has done something pleasent....appreciative,,,hopefully Mr. Edhi will get the the nobel prize too...
Nobel Prize reccomendations should have other names as well. The SIUT Sindh Institute of Urology Transplant of Dr. Adeeb Rizvi has enough merits for consideration for reccomending his name in this category due to his legislation for banning the trade for kidneys. Developed instituions, center of Excellence not even heard of any where in the world. His services will be honored if the message is propagated worldwide to honor all charity from Honorable Abdul Sattar Edhi for the Nobel Work of SIUT which is accredited with proper accounting audit by accredited financial accredited firm/individuals. Would request Mr. Edhi to nominate Dr. Adeeb Rizvi for this position. Besides the role of nuclear medicine, in the field of imaging as CT, MRI, and related applications is commendable by the Atomic Energy Commission scientisits and Doctors. I had reccomended PAEC role to the EU member countries to benefit from their research, and use facility for R&D.
No mention if the nomination was submitted before the deadline last week (January 31), if not, he'll have to wait yet another year. The Nobel Prize committee usually sends inquiries to governments if they want to submit a nomination. Petitions alone do not garner a nomination. I hope he is duly recognized for his selfless contribution to millions of Pakistanis and humanity.
So, now thats a good news ...
