KARACHI: The authorities claim to have arrested seven suspects, after raids and encounters in Surjani, Manghopir and Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) managed to arrest two men identified as Kashif Baloch and Nadeem Baloch from Surjani Town. The SIU chief SSP Shahjahan Khan told The Express Tribune that the suspects were responsible for the hand grenade attack on the Green Hardware store in Liaquatabad which injured five people including the owner. He said that the men had attacked the hardware store to pressure the owner into withdrawing the case against Lyari gangster Shakir.

A couple of months ago, Shakir opened fire at the store and injured a customer when the owner refused to give him money. SSP Khan added that the suspects had demanded Rs500,000 as extortion from the store owner. While talking to the media, SSP Khan said that the suspects were associated with Lyari gangster Ghaffar Zikri’s group. He added that they were still looking for other members of the Zikri group including, Mullah Ram Janay, Saqib, Fahim, Hayat and Danish.

According to the police officer, the suspects had confessed to being involved in the murder of five men from a rival group. Kashif was responsible for killing Fahim two months ago, while Nadeem had killed four men in 2002. “We have been looking for the suspects for quite a while now and were not succeeding,” said SSP Khan. “It looks like our luck has finally changed.” The police said that the suspects were wanted for several robberies. They seized two hand grenades and two TT pistols from them.

The SIU also arrested three suspects identified as Tariq Hussain alias Humayun, Hanif and Amir after an encounter in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. They said that the suspects were demanding Rs500,000 as extortion from Dr Ejaz from the Qatar Hospital in Orangi Town. SSP Khan said that initially the extortion case was registered with the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police but it was transferred to the SIU.

In another raid, the police arrested two gangsters identified as Abdul Sattar Bugti and Ghulam Ali Soomro. They seized two TT pistols from them. SSP Shahjahan Khan said that the suspects had confessed to being associated with a Lyari gang but did not disclose which one. They were arrested while plotting a plan to intensify the gang war in Lyari.
