KARACHI: The owners of Iqbal Jewellers Shop in Kharadar’s Sarrafa Bazaar came to work on Monday morning to find that their shops had been broken in to and the display cases empty.

Men had broken the locks of the shop and left with more than Rs2 million worth in jewellery.

Abdul Majeed, the shop owner, said that the thieves had entered between the night of Sunday and Monday.

SHO Ejaz Khawaja said that Majeed did not inform police about the actual amount or quantity of gold in the shop and had told them that he would inform them after estimating the loss. He said that two locks of the shop were broken and the thieves had used a ladder to enter.

Meanwhile, the traders of Liaquatabad’s Sarraffa Bazaar protested against increasing robberies. The shopkeepers blocked the main road from Liaquatabad No.10 to Teen Hatti Bridge and chanted slogans against the law-enforcement agencies.

They said that the police had not taken any action to control the burglaries in the area and this was why the robbers were growing confident. A shopkeeper had been injured in the bazaar on Sunday during a robbery as well.

They dispersed after the police arrived and assured the people that they will take steps to curb the prevalent robberies.
