SUKKUR:

Hundreds of Shias organised a big protest at Katcheri Road in Khairpur on Friday afternoon, to demand that the cases booked on Thursday against people of their sect be withdrawn by the district administration.

The protest was led by Shia Ulema Council, the president of Shia Rabita Council Khairpur, Allama Mazhar Abbas Naqvi, and Syed Munawwar Shah, of Shia Ulema Council.

The protesters marched from Khaki Shah Pul and staged a sit-in at National Bank Chowk at Kacheri Road. They later burnt tyres and blocked traffic for about an hour.

The Shia leaders condemned the sectarian clash that took place on Thursday and alleged that some elements were trying to create hatred between Shias and Sunnis.

They said that the Khairpur police booked innocent Shias for the clash on Thursday and termed it “unjustified” and demanded that the district administration withdraw the cases.

They also demanded to change the prayer leaders of Shams Mosque and Jamia Siddiq-e-Akbar Masjid, because according to them, they were spreading hatred.
