On a tip-off, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Saddar Sajjad Khan, Station House Officer (SHO) Faqirabad Granullah, SHO Badber Abid Khan, Assistant Sub-Inspector Shahvez reached the area and started a search operation.
The accused, identified as Akhtar alias Sur, opened fire as he saw the police, which provoked a crossfire. Sur, who was an Afghan refugee was killed in the crossfire.
The police also recovered one Kalashinkov and magazines from his possession.
An official told The Express Tribune that the police were still searching for Sur's accomplice, Sarfaraz.
He added that Khan was killed when he was patrolling in the Musazai area located on the outskirts of Peshawar with other police officials. The officials tried to stop two suspicious men who were on a motorcycle for an interrogation, but the men opened fire on them which injured Khan.
He was then rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital where he died.
