An extension for the army chief

KARACHI: This is with reference to Syed Talat Hussain’s article “Extension not a good idea” (July 26). Strong institutions like the Pakistan army draw strength not from personalities but from laid-down rules, processes and standing operating procedures that cannot be violated. Strict adherence to customs of service and observance of military traditions makes the army a very well-organised and well-knit institution. Accustomed to following orders without questioning with willing obedience, it matters more to the soldiers what the orders are than who is giving them.

For soldiers a change of COAS is nothing more than a change of name and face. In my opinion it is not the extension in service of the army chief that is harmful to the army but the undue criticism that continues on this issue in the media. Those empowered to grant extension have exercised their authority and the one entitled to it has benefited. We should believe in the wisdom of those elected by the people and empowered to take all decisions on their behalf.

Seen from the perspective of the troubled times we are living in, it is not the army but the country which needs the COAS to continue serving in his present position.
