RAWALPINDI:

To press for better pay structures, about 150 nurses from the three allied hospitals in the city protested here on Friday. They asked the government to provide them with service structures and facilities according to their grade.

At around 9am, all the nurses from Holy Family Hospital (HFH), District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) and Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) gathered in front of the main emergency of the BBH. They condemned the November 24 incident, where women police beat up nurses in Lahore, and expressed unity with their fellow nurses who were beaten up by women police in Lahore.

Later the protesting nurses blocked the Benazir Bhutto Road and Sixth Road and staged a sit-in there.

“We will be on strike until we get a copy of the notification issued by the Punjab government,” said Ayesha while talking to The Express Tribune. She added, “Our colleagues in Lahore will also continue their sit-in in front of the Chief Minister House till the fulfilment of their demands.”

“Our job is toughest among all the health practitioners but unfortunately we are not even getting our basic rights,” added another nurse.

They threatened to include student nurses in their protest if their demands were not met. This will disturb the entire health service system in the hospitals, she added.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokar reached the place and assured them of a positive result by Monday. However, the chief minister of Punjab said that the process would take three weeks.

The staff nurses have also called a meeting on Saturday (today) in which they will chalk out their future strategy.
