Post-Eid scenario: Peshawar streets littered with animal remains
The sanitation situation in the provincial metropolis exposed the poor performance of the authorities as sanitation staff have failed to dispose of remains on the third day of Eid ul Azha, The Express Tribune learnt on Wednesday.
The district administration had cancelled the holidays of concerned staff during Eid so that animal remains could be removed quickly, but all its efforts proved to be in vain as sacrificial remains were seen lying in every nook and corner of the city. The streets of the interior areas of the walled city including Rampura Gate, Ghareebabad, Dalazak Road, Gulbahar and others reek of decaying remains, making locals miserable.
“The cleanliness situation is not up to the mark,” said Rehmat Shah, a local, adding that the stench of remains is unbearable.
He says that the concerned authorities only make hollow claims while taking no practical action.
Orangazeb, a resident of the Kohati area, said that the lack of proper sanitation arrangements on the third day of Eid speaks volumes of the callous attitude of the responsible departments.
He further said that due to the bad odour of animal remains, it is difficult for one to step out of the house.
“It’s the government’s responsibility to keep the city clean, but the relevant authorities have turned a blind eye to the poor sanitary situation of the city,” he complained, adding that the animal remains lying everywhere are sufficient proof of negligence.
Dr Liaquat Ali feared that animal remains could spread diseases, adding that mosquitoes and houseflies sit on the piles of animal remains and transmit germs to people.

Well, if we stopped wanton slaughter of animals, then this stench would probably be non-existent. I doubt this situation is going to improve otherwise....
These people inherit the wind. They should cease sacrificing animals to their heathen gods - and realise there is only ONE GOD - FATHER OF ALL..... and he does not want them to make these sacrifices, but learn to love all animals, including their fellow man. If they continue on this path they will suffer all manner of diseases - so the ball is in their court.
Not really the fault of the sanitation department, more the fault of the people who buy too many animals, slit their throats whilst still alive and then realise that after eating far too much, they just discard it into the street.
Surely the meat could have been given to the poor of the town who would be greatful at such a bounty from fellow muslims ?
Maybe the sanitation department will take a few weeks to clear it away, to remind the locals at what a shamefull thing they have done ?
