ISLAMABAD:

Spain has donated $0.68 million to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) for its water, sanitation and hygiene emergency response to the 2011 floods.

“This support comes at a very important juncture when funding for the floods response is limited for flood victims who are in temporary shelters,” said Unicef Pakistan Representative Dan Rohrmann.

Unicef is currently providing safe water to more than 700,000 flood-affected people daily through a combination of water trucking, household water treatment and installation of hand pumps, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in his statement Ambassador of Spain Gonzalo Quintero Saravia said: “On the occasion of the terrible floods suffered once more by the people of Pakistan, it is an honour for me to announce the ever-lasting commitment of Spain to Pakistan.” It is in times of hardship when concrete actions give testimony to the existence of a solid and mature friendship, he said.
