DUBLIN:
This is with reference to Aziz Akhmad’s article “Progress is like toothpaste” (July 19). The writer is absolutely correct in saying that Pakistan was never conceived as a theocratic state. As a matter of fact, all major religious parties opposed its creation. The irony is that now these same elements have hijacked the ideology of the state. Thankfully, these parties only have a nuisance value and have never been voted to power. If that had happened or if it ever happens Pakistan would become a security threat for its neighbours.

If Pakistan was to be created in the name of Islam then some Mullah and not the secular Mr Jinnah would be leading its movement. As a matter of fact no Mullah would let him or anyone without a beard, lead the movement.
