US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wants the ISI to launch reconciliation talks, which she has termed as “Fight, Talk, Build”, the New York Times has reported.
The US aimed to end the war in Afghanistan by its renewed approach.
NYT reports that there are some elements in the ISI that are not moved by the approach to force dialogue because they might lose influence in Afghanistan, as the US is planning to withdraw troops from the region.
A senior American official termed Pakistan’s stance as “Cease-fire, Talk, Wait for the Americans to Leave”.
A former top White House aide on Pakistan and Afghanistan Shamila N. Chaudhary said:
The big question for the administration is, what can the Pakistanis actually deliver? Pakistan is holding its cards very closely.
However, senior Pakistani officials remain confused by US plans in Afghanistan after it offered Pakistan to have a prominent position in the reconciliation, but at the same time warned Pakistan of unilateral action if talks fall flat on the negotiation table.
Clinton’s take on the issue also surges confusion as she presses for talks and asks Pakistan to “squeeze Haqqanis.”
She said:
We want to fight, talk and build all at the same time. Part of the reason for that is to test whether these organizations have any willingness to negotiate in good faith.

when some one or some group of people fight for there right like taliban no one can defeat them.you can,t say they are terrorist.fristly see that what the people are demanding.whenever you try to interfering other international issues whether they are muslim or not you will lost by your valoue, economic position and respect in the world eye,s.if america stay more in afghanistan, china will became super power soon.we can say china is sup.er power now
If the United States with all its military might and technology could not control Afghanistan and control the terrorists I think its VERY unrealistic to assume that Pakistan will be able to live up top America's expectations. its unfair to use Pakistan as a scape goat for U.S failures in Afghanistan. America has failed on every front on war against terrorism just as they did on war on drugs.
Old Chinese saying, Can't Live With You, can't Do Without You..... ISI come and Get Me Outta Here...
I think that american government has realized that that can't fight with Taliban. As everyone can see that they have losted their soldiers in Afghanistan and also they have paid a large amount of money to finish them. Now after 10 years they have decided that they should talk to Taliban.they are calling ISI to help them which they have said that they are helping Taliban.what a shame?.
Finally US's think tankers admitted that there is no solution in this world can be solved by Military power but table talk can be only way to solve any mammoth disputes.
@YeaRight:
Too true!
As I said a few days ago, the Americans will give us all a good laugh before beating a disgraceful retreat. The question is, will they achieve their aims in Afghanistan, such as TAPI etc? That country is known for putting a spoke in the wheel where pipelines are concerned!
@ashok sai respect? is that what the world runs on? cos as far as I can see US is one of the least respected countries (if you dont believe check the Gallup poll in all the Middle East and Muslim countries) yet do you think the US cares? It does what it feels like. Its called self-interest and realism. The Afghans will kick out US, just like the Iraqis kicked out US. Its a reality that the world will have to accept and not the other way around, because the reality is there for everyone to see. Indians need to stop deluding themselves, stop mocking Pakistan and focus on your own issues first and foremost.
Indians are cringing
Why hasn't Nadir El-Edroos commented yet?
@sesso: @antanu g:
Unless the decisions are taken by the elected representatives(one which you have voted), never ever expect the respect from the international communities. All the benefit will come in the form of rich golf courses, Suv's, etc. and for you always your favourite grass !!!
Its too late now, u want to pack, while they are in a position to take revenge !!!!! and why ISI now ? Do not try toplay with us, go yourself and fight.
This is the real face of Americans, that most of the rightist had pointed out, but the so-called liberals and pro-americans were denying it. If you were to negociate with the talibans and Haqqanis, that had already been suggested to do so, then what was the purpose of pressurizing Pakistan to launch offensive against them. It was good that pakistan resisted and didn't succumbed to US pressure, now they are begging Pakistan to help their withdrawal. I mean how ironic it is that on one hand they seek our help and on the other they treat us as their mercenary, while advocating India's cause in front of us.
@Realistic: Did you even forget how this war started? 1) By talk they mean beat them hard enough that they become weak and realize that they should stop fighting so that they want to live in peace and accept the authority of Afghan government and constitution thus making Afghanistan a stable country. And those who are attacking it from our tribal areas should accept Afghanistan as sovereign country and not meddle in their affair. 2) That's where fight and talk comes in to play ... They are individuals and not a one unit .. some would want to live peacefully after getting something in return, a part in government or something .. while others would want to fight as they think they are strong thus fight those and make them weaker. 3) Peace 4) Do you disagree that they are terrorists? Are not they killing civilians even in our cities? Thats why the first demand of US is to disarm them if not kill them. 5)No, you forgot something. US started it against Al-qaeda not Taliban .. once they refused to handover UBL they came to get him ... for many years Talibans were sitting quietly but when they started to attack them NATO had to retaliate. Put yourself in the shoes of US and then think if you are in charge of Kabul would you sit quietly or would you want taliban to attack you.. They do realize the fact that some Taliban are genuinely afghan and that's why they want to talk to them and give them a share in afghan govt But not to those who are hiding in FATA. 6) I agree with you on this that US policies are not just in some parts of the world but that depends from which side you are looking at it and know the basic reasons why they are doing something rather than how. We are all human and we do what is best for us not for others its a natural thing. Besides jiss ki laathi uss ki bhains .. then why not be the laati owner instead of fighting like kids and getting slapped.?
"A senior American official termed Pakistan’s stance as “Cease-fire, Talk, Wait for the Americans to Leave”."
This makes far more sense than US stance which is to fight at the same time as holding talks lol There can be peace tomorrow if US stops being arrogant, accept defeat and talk to the Taliban.
@Sirat-ul-mustaqeem: US does want to exit gracefully but doesn't want to leave our backyard as a junkyard .. They want it to have a government which is at least strong enough to be able to sustain itself and not vanish and overtaken but the same forces which were there in 1990's (a civil war & taliban). Our ISI gets blamed when American forces are killed every now and then. If the Haqqanis are not letting them exit peacefully and attacking them every now and then, How can you expect US a sole super power to sit quietly?. Our own people don't care about Pakistan and want to fight foreign forces putting Pakistan behind and then we blamed people like Zardari & NS for not caring for the country? How naive. At least we should be thankful that US is mature enough to not act immaturely like they did in 1945 against Japan.
The silence of paid bloggers on this article is surprising.
Vienna,31-10-2011 Wait and watch who wins. United States of America is on solid ground and up on the air unchallenged. Al-Queda bums would be defeated. If Pakistanis comprehend it is good luck for common Pakistani millions. Imran Khan can pull the crowd in Cairo, Istambul or elsewhere. @Adeel759: Hahahha may be its time you start watching some other news network than fox news
@ashok sai: if they broker peace then they are better than all the super/emrging powers who dont want peace. i think you are disappointed that Pakistan was not bombed to stone age by US despite all the rhetoric
@Realist. # 5. No, it wasn't wrong to start the war since it was declared from the mud-houses of kandhar, when they refused to hand over OBL. Idea behind the war was to rid the Afghanistan, Pakistan, Region and the world of the menace of terror. So oppressed people of afghanistan could live under freer, tolerant, progressive, inclusive and elected govt. But I believe some in that region doesn't want that. America should pull out, keep drones flying, tighten borders at homeland. Let you deal with your issues. By US pulling out, Real defeated are the people of Afghanistan, who are denied progress and development
lol looks like Pakistan finally had the balls to stand against mighty US pressure and ultimately we are noticing some sort of compromise from Americans now ...I think, Pakistan should really deliver now and gets Haqqanis on the table and play the cards smartly ..some sorta peace deal with all the stakeholders will be beneficiary for all the sides and yeah peace with Haqqani group not with TTP thugs.
I don't know who is the one with the IQ below 50. USA or the TALIBAN? You Kill their children and you want to negotiate??
Wait a minute. Doesn't the US refrain from negotiating with terrorists? First they tell us to attack them and all the while they are trying to get them to come to the negotiating table. Makes me think the Pakistani Gov made the right decision when it did not attack the Haqqanis. The US seems seriously confused
So what is the outcome of ten years of war. You could have done it without killing thousands.
calling out RS Johar.......................... LOL at the new headline. I think the US has lost it and has become tri-polar!
Americans never forget & will never let us off the hook! We need to be careful
Ally has now become broker, normally brokers are expected to be whisked away once the transaction is over.
This is beyond understanding of an ordinary people of Pakistan rather the whole world, what you mean by talks?
1) You (Taliban) stay safe and let us (US) stay safe? 2). Put the guns down, which Taliban may not accept by talks only, if they did not do it even killed, how can they now? 3). What US and Pakistan is gonna offer them, because both are not in a position to get something but let something? 4). If Taliban are real terrorists and putting all the world peace at risk, then why we need to talk to them, let this war finish conclusive. 5). Whether US have realized that initiation of war against Taliban was wrong, and want just to end it. 6). Talks without resolution of basic issues is baseless.
Please promote fairness throughout the world, you will find peace and love, otherwise its natural that human reacts.
Oh, really .... how clever!
Wow, ok let me get this straight. On one hand you want ISI to help you but at the same time, you continue to malign ISI and Pakistan's security agencies through daily articles on well known western media. You want our help but you let India take the big chair in Afghanistan. Yes Madam what a great policy of talk and fight at the same time.
