Begum Bhutto’s death

Letter October 25, 2011
It is quite unfortunate to see the way the PPP is behaving after the death of Begum Nusrat Bhutto.

ISLAMABAD: It is quite unfortunate to see the way the PPP is behaving after the death of Begum Nusrat Bhutto. There is no denying the fact that she suffered more than her share of tragedies and did so with dignity and poise. That said, she played a marginal role in politics and had been out of the public eye for a long time.

The men and women crying and beating their chests in public, the declaration of a national holiday in a country already reeling under economic pressures, a 10-day period of national mourning and 40-day mourning by the PPP, and the conferring of Nishan-i-Pakistan on the departed soul, makes one think that why didn’t the party appreciate her more when she was alive.

Of course, to a third-party observer, it seems that the party now spares no occasion to take advantage of the Bhutto name.
